Local Hobby Shop!!!

I needed to get a set of cables for my newest plane so I went down to the "sort" of local hobby shop( 50 miles away) in Rock Hill SC. I found the cables I needed plus they had 20 gallons of Sig Champion 10%nitro 25% castor fuel , CL tanks and a dozen or so Brodak kits!!!!There are 4 other shops in the area and none have anything C/L related. What does everyone else's LHS carry?

Our LHS were I live closed - the one where I work carries no C/L whatever (I did get a bargain OS25FP from there which he'd had in the shop for months though).

It's ok for items common between CL and RC (props etc) though and he's happy to get stuff (like Solartex and extra Castor).

Mind you it was he who sold me 10% oil fuel for a Fox 35 in the first place telling me it'd be ok.....

My local hobby shop in Leeds, UK, has a limited range of C/L ancilliaries e.g. lines, clips, bellcranks and tanks, four or five Brodak kits some Keil Kraft C/L kits and some Estes C/L kits.

Its saving grace is that it is a 10 minute drive away, has unlimited supplies of wood, piano (music) wire, wheels, glues, dopes, covering materials and copious amounts of diesel fuel. The only C/L specific engines stocked are the PAW diesel range as well as the odd Mills 1.3cc replica.

They will order anything that I want but its quicker and cheaper to order off the Internet. I don't worry about me affecting the turnover by going elsewhere when my average spend for C/L and FF is way below what the R/C guys spend.

My biggest spend is usually at the UK C/L nationals where some great bargains can be had.

Regrettably, MY "LHS" are now a bunch of mail order places. I go to Superior Balsa and Riley Wooten's for my wood, Brodak for hardware, with engine stuff from Leonard. I try to stock up on fuel at the Perry, GA show every spring.

LHS here is all RC oriented. They do carry Midwest balsa, or some heavy stuff that is supposedly balsa but has the consistency of spruce. They won't order the high castor fuels, so that is pretty much a bust. Selection of music wire and CL hardware is pretty much non existant. But, they cater to what the local market will bring, so "MY" LHS of choice is but a click away on the internet.

Don't worry about the 10% nitro - the Fox will like it just fine. If it does break too harshly, try adding another head gasket to tame it. The one advantage of higher nitro fuel is that your consumption will go up a little, and that means more lube running out of the engine. As a lot of our cooling comes from the absorption of the engine heat by the lube, and that hot lube is evacuated from the engine via the exhaust. In the deep South in summer, that can be a good thing... .

I think he said 10% oil. That's not good for a Fox. Where did he even find 10% oil fuel? THe only guys I've known suing oil that low are some team racers and they use diesels at aobut 7%.

Sorry to break your hearts, but G&D Hobbies is in Sandwich, IL, about 20 miles away from my house. G&D has a large inventory of C/L items. They probably stock at least 1 of every C/L kit made in the U.S. plus I've seen some Keil Kraft; also an excellent selection of C/L engines including some reworks and a good parts inventory. They also stock some old kits (Top Flight, Veco, etc.) plus handles and control hardware from Windy, etc; Sig and Brodak dope; and Sig Champion fuel in various blends. The owner of the shop flies everything but has a love of C/L.

We are VERY lucky to have this shop so close to us.

It's Model Technics Dynaglo - 8% synthetic, 2% castor and up 0 to 25% Nitro.

Luckily I never run any of my motors on it before I made the oil up to 29% with extra castor.

My fault. I read your intial post and then mixed it with Tony's post. Foolish mistake on my part. Sorry for any confusion it caused.

My LHS's are multiple, including 5 Hobby People stores, Jax, RSM's factory store, Superior Balsa's factory store, Covina Hobbies, MECOA's factory store, and the winner and all-time champeen, T&A Hobbies in Burbank.

T&A has been there for something like 50 years, and I think Tony has all his original stock stuffed in drawers and shelves. He even carries indoor supplies including microfilm solution.

There is a big supply of CL kits, engines, and hardware. Know anywhere else you can get .008 solid CL lines?

Tony and his mom Addie, are among the most knowledgable modelers anywhere, and very glad to help with advice.

If you open the range out to about 50 miles, I can get to Aerodyne for custom blended fuel.

Oh, yes, there are also THREE exclusively CL clubs in the area and THREE dedicated CL flying fields with paved circles.

Back to the fuel with 10% oil. I think I remember reading that this mixture is used in some high revving model car engines.

Yes! Car Fuel. I once bought a gallon of Power Master 30% nitro car fuel and tried to run a Cox 049 on the stuff.. The engine ran great the first tank.. after that it didn't run so well.. Called Power Master to find out how much oil was in it and the gal told me "less than 10%". I can't imagine any engine liking that stuff.

The Hobby Stop in Rock Hill, SC has a pretty good stock of C/L hdw. & Kits becouse of one person ... Watt Moore. Watt has been extremely tenacious in promoting C/L flying all of his life. He even has a circle beside his office in (almost) downtown Rock Hill. You should check him out the next time you ar in Rock Hill. It is at the corner of SC 161 and India Hook Rd. His office is up the hill in the two story brick building ... Moore Engineering. He is a one man company, so he is not always in.

While you are in Rock Hill, drive 30 miles more up I-77 to Huntersville on any Saturday Morning, or expecially on the 4th Saturday of each month. You will find the "Carolina Gang". We would love to see you.

I was wondering way the "Hobby Stop" had so much stuff. Your club is the one I will join here in alittle while. I'm in Concord,NC. I have been up to the field many time to watch R/C in the past( Yes... I have sold all my RC stuff) and have never seen any C/L action other than during the CL contest which I had to miss last weekend due to I was working in High Point!! How many members are there in the CL club?

Of course Fred, the downside is that we are broke all the time!

Our J & M Hobbies on Laurel Street in San Carlos, CA is a close second (to T & A's) in terms of service to disciplines beyond RC. The White family (first Joe and the Mrs. and now Cliff and his) has run it since at least 1966 (when Shareen and I moved to the area) and for some time before that.

They've always stocked a large supply of Control Line kits and tons of accessories plus the largest supply of engine parts I've seen in a local HS. My biggest coup, however, is finally getting Cliff to get on the Brodak dope band wagon.

I am glad that you did not tell everybody that we can fly virtually throughout the year because the weather is hardly ever a factor.

Tim:

We have about 40 members, but some are from pretty far from Huntersville, and don't get there to fly except at the contests. As I said, Saturday morning is a pretty good time to catch a small number of us there. I try to get down from Statesville at least every other week.

Tomorrow I won't be there since I'll be at the District IV IMAA fly in here in Statesville. Yes, I do fly RC, as do a number of other club members. I'm a firm believer that you don't have to be either RC or CL. And, the field will be closed to CL flying next weekend (June 15-16) due to a Pattern Contest. There is no real reason to close to CL on these RC Contests, but it is a bit of pay-back to us for closing the field to RC during CL Contests.

Our next monthly meeting will be June 22. That is usually a good time to find a good turnout. I hope to see you there then.

I suppose we are luckier than most in OKC.
The best LHS is a primarily RC shop naturally and very short on floor space but does stock a few Sig and Brodak kits, OS LA C/L engines, lines, tanks, etc. and always has a good supply of Balsa USA balsa and 1/16 through 1/8 contest sheets. Nice guy, he'll order any Brodak or Sig product and it will be there in a few days. Everything is competitively priced.
Powermaster GMA fuel is intermittently available in a limited number of brews. Plenty of props, wheels, glues, hardware, etc. and open 5.5 days a week. The shop carrys a very limited stock of Sig dope, lots of Lusterkote and all flavors of moneykote and similar coverings. Has OS and ST parts but seldom the ones you need. Gives reliable information on the telephone, etc.
Considering some of the LHS storys I've heard, I guess we are pretty well off.

Here in Rocket City, Alabama, our LHS is mainly RC and RC cars at that. It has a dirt track along side the building. They are in the dark about c/l, but did order and recieve four quarts of Sig Nitrate dope for me. Mainly Sig balsa and ply, Sig dope, props, nuts and bolts, spinners, glues, etc. No c/l fuel, but he does carry some 1/2A stuff, (fuel, kits, cox PT 19, etc.). I have lived in ten states and this is the worst for u/c, but I just pick up the phone, call Brodaks and 24 hours later the federal Express truck pulls into my driveway. Or I call RSM. I have ordered stuff from Sig my phone and 48 hours later it was here. Oh how I miss San Diego, CA or Memphis, TN.

Bill Where else do can one fly in the Charlotte area besides Huntersville such as when the field is closed. I will be in Huntersville three times this summer and fall and will move to Charlotte in Oct this year.

BTW, I forgot Hobby Warehouse, Earle's hobbies, two more places I can never remember down in Orange County, and that Spruce Supply place in Ontario that has all the Randolph Dope, Spruce, and exotic composite stuff.

But then we needn't mention the ready access to industrial supply houses for plastics, tools, metals, processes.

Just wouldn't want to spoil people with all that, when they can have mosquitoes, hurricaines and tornados instead.

Besides Huntersville there is Watt Moore's field in Rock Hill, SC and His other field at the Rock Hill Airport. Best to call Watt for directions and when those fields can be used.

The Huntersville field will be closed this weekend due to a RC Pattern Contest. Other than that, it is rarely closed.

We missed you at our recent contest. I hope you won't be in the middle of moving at the October contest, Oct. 19 & 20.

We've never had a hurricane or tornado in Central Oregon, although we do have a few skeeters. Nothing like the ones I got used to in Alaska, (that could be dealt with with a 12 gauge if you could re-load fast enough, ask O.S.).
We do have something here that scared my little sister when she first came up from San Diego: invisible air! She said she wasn't sure there was any at first cuz she couldn't see it! hehehe

Bill Thanks for the info. I will be at my daughters house five miles from the Huntersville field this weekend.I know about the R/C meet this weekend thats why I was asking about other places to fly. Yes we are moving some time in October,but I will be in Charlotte several times befor that date.I have flown many times at the Huntersville field when only R/C guys were there and they lanched my plane for me.I will call Watt when I get there.

The best hobby shop I was ever in is penn Valley hobby shop in Lansdale Pa. They are stuffed to the gils with everything. They have dozens of c/l kits. tanks, engines dope etc. - They have so many kits that they pack them sideways so you only see the end of the box. the free flight and r/c guys get the same treatment. Sometimes you might even get lucky and run into some famous personalities, like Bob Zambelli or who is that other guy, Bon Jovi?

Is there any flying during the week, say in the early evening right after work? I'm down at Tyvola road near the coliseum and have time free during the week but spend my weekends in Winston Salem. I've got two little, ones both under three, so I don't get much time to fly on Sat and Sun.

Unfortunately, the Huntersville field doesn't get used much in the evenings or during the week. Since you are in the Tyvola area, you should call Watt Moore in Rock Hill. He is in the PAMPA directory. I think there is much more flying going on down there during the week.

There is also some flying at the Winston-Salem "Hobby Park". Call Tommy Luper (also in the PAMPA directory) to get more info on that field.

The Hobby Stop in Rock Hill, SC is the only shop in the greater Charlotte area that stocks any C/L. Mostly Brodak Kits, LA-S motors and the last time I was there, a ST 51.

Take I-77 south to SC exit #77. Turn right at the top of the ramp and go about 1/4 mile. The shop is on the right. It is run by two brothers. One is interested in flying and one is interested in cars. They have a great high banked oval track. The races are actually interesting to watch. ESPN actually filmed a race there.

But I digress. This is Watt Moore's home teritory, and he is mainly responsible for the C/L stock that they do carry.
