For all of those worried about my septic tank adventures, I had a slightly unusual helper last weekend. And I thought you might want to hear about it.
While only Randy, Not That Randy, would be able to explain it (please don't, even if you can), kids love to hang around me and whatever I am doing at the moment. On the day in question I had spliced in a new line from effluent tank to drain field and was pondering the possibility of having to actually get in the tank, repositioning the pump. Yes, I have been in there before. No, it's not fun.
The 4-year-old boy from two houses away came by, shot me several times with his teeny little squirt gun, I hosed him with a Super Squirt. We went on like this for a bit until his 7-year-old sister showed up, asked all the usual questions, we teased each other about poopy dirt, poopy water, etc., etc.
The boy went home, presumably to get more firepower for the squirt gun wars, never came back. His sister also went home, but quickly returned, wearing a costume from a school activity. Long white socks, no shoes. Wrap-around pink skirt, pink blouse and angel wings strapped to her body. Looked kinda cool in a weird sort of way.
The girl proceeded to tromp around, asking more questions, until noticing that her socks were filthy from walking around in the poopy dirt. Back home she went, returned wearing thongs.
While all of this was going on I had managed to move the pump around without getting in the tank and had begun to shovel dirt back on top of the tank. The girl asked if she could help, without stopping I told her, "Sure, grab that small shovel," and I continued with my work.
In my world it was a semi-normal deal, kids hanging around, getting involved in whatever I am doing. But as my angelic little friend and I were taking turns at moving this big old pile of dirt down into that empty hole, I noticed movement to my left.
About half the neighborhood had either seen or heard what was going on and there they were, giggling, snapping pictures, trying to avoid detection.
In looking at the pictures (same-day developing is not such a boon to mankind that I couldn't live without it), I must admit it was quite a sight. The angel and I didn't finish our work that day, but when she is a teenager she will have some serious explaining to do.
