BRODAK'S CONTEST

What happened at Brodak's on friday and saturday?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Rain....

Aw, bummer! Hope there were some good rounds of Parcheesi!

It has rained on and off all three days but everyone that was willing did get to fly, Considering the circumstances everything has gone exceptionally well.. Had a little entertainment yesterday evening with 3 Bi-Slobs in the circle at the same time and a 1.5 size flight streak with a 1.08 swinging a 14" prop.

I will get pictures of the score boards this evening and post them in the morning..

What a great time! Despite the rain, there was plenty of flying going on all day Saturday. Got to meet some of the people who frequent the SSW board. Warren Wagner, Owen Richards, Don Ogren,
Dave Reyes and his son Jesse, Walter Umland (wow , nice kits),
Ty Marsucci, all great, friendly guys. Got to see, but didn't get to actually meet, Bad Andy, Windy Urtnowski (you have to see his airplanes!) and Tom Morris (got to get some of his handles).
Brodak's will definately be on my 'to do' list for many more years. Next year my goal will be to go and compete.
My ulterior motive for taking the kids to Brodaks worked out also. I figured they would get more excited about flying if they saw something like this. Now they can't wait to get out and fly and learn some 'stunts', so they can fly beginner stunt next year.
Between his hobby shop and his backyard (literally his backyard), John Brodak has what every control liner must dream about. Stacks of kits and supplies and 6 circles available to fly on, when the mood strikes you. You should see his personal air armada hanging in his garage. I hear he is quite a good flyer too.
All in all, a really great time with really great people all around. If you can make it next year, I'd definately suggest putting the Brodak Fly-in on your list.

Rain, some wind, more rain. Not one complaint about the rain. We flew in it. Dead calm. Of course there were a lot of flame outs, mine was inverted. Plowed the grass, no damage (broken wood props don't count). Best part about the rain is a hundred great guys got together under the tents and awnings and got to meet each other for the first time and to renew very old friendships. Met several great wives, they actually pit and don't mind the castor exhust. But we did have a long discourse on how to get the odour out of the clothes!!! Lots of Tide and wash at the local washateria, not at home . The really strange part of the entire meet, to me, was all the left handed flyers!! I counted 9. All flew like most of us right handers, counter (anti) clockwise. One right hander flew clockwise! Usually you see only one left handed guy at a contest, but 9! It was interesting and all of them flew great. Hmmm. Maybe I should learn to fly left handed. Of course it helps if the plane leaves the ground!! All in all, second only to VSC in my little mind. I have reservations at the motel for next year.

You have inadvertently breached a subject which has long been super hush hush - the inherent advantage of flying left handed. Just as serious baseball players learn to bat left handed as an optimum setup against right handed pitchers, flying CCW favors the lefty.

Now, if you'll run the engine CW as well..

When I first decided to go to the Fly-In I had some reseverations about whether or not 4 days of controlline flying would turn out to be a little excessive--it being only my third contest. Boy--was I wrong. It was "totally awesome"--well run, all the obstacles overcome, great company, great food, met some new friends, learned a lot--what more could you ask? Thanks

It was a blast! I had so much fun and made many new friends, and put more faces with names then you could imagine. For the most part we had good flying weather, then the rain came in and Sunday he winds showed up. Happy to report that there wasnt a large amount of aircraft lost ( cant say the same about the group fly ) but thats another story. I am already planning planes for nextyear. Hey thanks Jim, but I will not be able to be at the nats this year. I have yet to finish the repairs to my nats plane for #1 and for #2-100 my wife asked me in several ways to skip it. You can imagine all 99 ways of saying your not going right? Anyway, I will miss going this year, I was really trying and practicing hard for it. As my buddy Watt Moore said, take your time fix your plane and build even another Avanti and keep up what I have been doing here at the homestead and just get them nextyear. If I keep peaking at the bottom of these fuel cans I will be a little sharper when I get there.
On another note, WOW that B-25 is georgeous. Windy really did his homework on this one. Hats off to you Windy for the B-25 and the win in expert.
And for John and Buzz, Love ya both and thankyou for such a great event and hospitality.

Speaking of food, did you see how inexpensive the hot dogs, coffee and colas were?? I could eat there for a week and not ruin a 20.00 bill. Only place to eat, at the field. Can't wait until next year, only got to stay out of the hobby shop. Too easy to max out my cards, but oh, the choices and stuff not listed in the catalog. Best buy was the gallon cans of Brodaks clear and thinner. Went back next day to get more, it was gone. Dumb of me not to buy four when I had a chance. The real neat part was seeing all the prototype models hanging from the ceiling. No they are not for sale. They just laughed at me. I did get to see a few of the planes coming out not yet kitted.

By the way Jim flew it did not look like his third contest. He had a very nice 2nd PA flight. Here is a photo of Jim & his 4 stroke powered origanal stunter. I got to know Jim because we were next to each other in the pits. Brodaks was fun.

Last year i flew in this meet with a worn out knee. This year I flew with a brand new replacement knee. What an improved time! Pat Rowan and I teamed up to fly Foxberg with a GB Buster which had hung on my wall for 28 years! Pulled that sucker down and we took second behind Willis Swindell and John TAte who have won every Foxberg Race at Brodak's since the event has been offered. What a fun time to come back into the circle against old friends since the early 60's. Flying OTS was a blast against Bad Andy who aced me out for first in ADV. by a few points but the two of us laughed all the way. He's a fine Classic Judge too elieve it or not! The high point of my competitive years since 1997 has been this gathering of friends. So what if we got a little wet? More opportunity to chat and make new friends. Bob Brookings painting seminar on Sat eve was well done too. Got too tired to see Tom Dixon do his glueing presentation but I am positive it was well done too. If you can only get to one meet per year this is the one to go to.

Hey Phil - Just a minor Foxberg Note-
Last year Mary was Lapping everyone 3-2 in Foxberg when the timer forgot to stop the clock. If Al Gore was Prez, Mare would be 1st in Foxberg 2001. She, like Al, placed second.
