Location, Location, Location,..idea?

Gents,
Something that the web enables us to do is to build a global community on our computers and our favorite website forums like SSW. It never fails to amaze me how far we travel on the net to get to those favorite sites. Our favorite web sites can be a global point of interest for what ever the event or interest is. On one of my motorcycle sites it's a somewhat unwritten rule that "we" the users fill in a profile page the least of which includes our location on this ball of dust(described in almost any fashion you would like, specific, or general). The site members doggedly pursue those that do not abide by the rule, to the point that very little info will be forth coming unless a location is provided. Sounds a little draconian perhaps but the driving force behind the idea is that a fellow member could be seconds, min's...or a couple hours away,..and we would never know it. The idea of giving help to someone who may be just around the corner fuels the request for the info. In my opinion it also makes the reading of the post a bit more interesting and somewhat sets the stage for the words we read. With the written(typed) word we get a flavor or vision of our fellow board members based on where they are on the planet,..at least that's how it works for me. So,..to the point. By no means do I suggest that it become a site policy,..but I'd like to know where in the heck your at . I've included a location in my "auto signature" thing here on the SSW site that Leonard provides for us some time back. I invite you to do the same. No arm twisting or anything,..just an idea. Yes, I know that you know that everyone knows where your at but....... Comments welcome too!

Perhaps you already know and I'm just missing the point, but it is possible to find out anyone's location by simply clicking the little icon for profile (a head) in the upper right portion of your screen.
Providing of course that the individual has included it in their profile, which I believe most have.
Am I missing something here?

You are correct. I guess I'm just use to the idea that it's posted automatically on each and every post that is entered, and shows on that persons posted pages without a click required. I guess in this case my idea/request is somewhat a mute point. The site format is the thing that makes it happen on my motorcycle site, which in effect displays the profile info to the left side of the forums posted pages for a given topic. Oh well....

It surprises me that quite a few do not at least list State on their profile much less city. I think one thing that is what is meant is this individual also likes it on your message as his is.

Btw,..the ST-51 passed inspection, crank and drive washer may be here this weekend. Case and Back-plate checked out o.k. and bearings are good. A less expensive fix for the most part as compared to worse case.

..yes you are correct...easy to see was more my point. Some might think me nosey perhaps but it just blows my mind how far and wide we are spread and still have the same interests and passions for c/l and other things. One thing that sparked this thread was the Nitro thread,..some can't get it or don't use it. In a way it is rather geographical in terms of access to it. What other things are this way with c/l stunt? Maybe we'll see a few trends like that one based on the geographical location of the members.

Hey, Steve. How long have you been in Renton? I lived there on Pelly St. until I finished high school at good old RHS in '61. Ran off to UPS in Tacoma for college and then moved to California in '66 for the airline gig.

Still get there once in a while to visit my brother.

I've been in the Seattle area since summer of '61 (flew with Phil Sheckler and Jerry Painter); Renton since '79. EMAC until they folded, then Strat-o-Bats. They folded up a few years ago. My mailing address is Port Orchard, though I've never really been sure why. We live between Port Orchard, Belfair and Purdy but we're actually a lot closer to Belfair. It's an area designated by the post office (with a brand new post office sub-station finished about 2 weeks ago) as Wildwood. After January 1st, they will redesinate the area. Same zip though.

I just finish rebuilding my SSW Magnum 53. Only problem I had is the only original parts are the rod, wristpin, venturi, case and back plate. Everything else is new. New piston and cylinder, head, crank and bearings.

Sure runs good on the bench. Now all I need is a plane to put it in.

Should I ask what happened that would cause the need for new parts, piston and sleeve in particular? Was this the "straight in" crashed motor you referred to above? Mr. Bill, who also crashed on the demo day, has yet to re-run his LA-46. We are hopeful that it is o.k. His model was running a large plastic Du-Bro spinner which totally came apart on impact. We theorize that this spinner destruction may have dissipated much of the impact loading on the crank area. My alum Tru-Turn spinner was totally intact albeit, dented beyond use. Bills P-51 wing seemed to have taken it's fair share of the impact also. Couple before, after, during shots below.

It was a weird crash. The plane hit turbulence in a somewhat low pullout recover from the entry into the outside squares. I was using a handmade 3 blade wood prop and while the plane didn't hit the ground (missed by maybe 2 inches, and did take off the rudder), the prop did hit and it shed a blade. I flipped the plane over, but the engine continued to run and was vibrating like the space shuttle taking off. The plane literally shook apart in thr air and with only the fuselage forward of the trailing edge and the inboard wing still attached, it bored in hitting the spinner and head very hard and pretty much equally, the engine running and vibrating all the way. The Randy Smith 3 blade 1 3/4" needle nose spinner was completely destroyed and the crank was clearly bent. Several of the fins in the head was gone and the front of the head had bits of asphalt imbedded in it.

Upon disassembly, a number of things were evident. I was just surprised the case wasn't damaged. The crank was trashed. 2 or 3 degrees from straight at the threads and appeared to have a hairline crack at the port. The head was trashed also and the hit was hard enough to knock the sleeve out of round. Checking the piston fit (when sleeve and piston were out of the case) showed that the piston would only travel up just past the ports before binding. So it was pretty clear the sleeve was out of round. Holding it up to the light and you could see it. The sleeve was slightly push in at the front. Again, it's a miracle that the case wasn't warped or damaged.

Just seemed a good idea to change out the bearings. With a hit like that, I didn't want to take a chance. But in the end, a new piston and sleeve, new crank and bearings along with a new head (a cool red anodized one) and it runs again just like it always did which is to say, very well.

Look like I'm in the same boat re: bearing change out. Don't know why I did it but... Yesterday I picked up the crankcase again and once more gave it a close look with the Mk-108 eye ball inspection device. Still no cracks found, which is a good thing. I also once again stuck finger on the inner race of the front bearing and very carefully gave it a slow spin turn,..."Click",...."CLick". Well it was more a "feel" thing then a "noise" thing. Fired up the heat gun again and warmed the nose of the case, and used a small tapered punch to gently tap the bearing out, which came out nice and easy btw. Rotated the bearing again and sure enough the click was there. Rather then risk the new crank to bearing failure and resulting damage a new bearing is going in the front of the 51. I'll have that installed today. New crank should be here today or tomorrow. Were do Tower motor parts ship from btw? Their catalog sales state Champaign, Ill. I've got a UPS tracking notice shown as coming out of Sparks NV. due in on the 5th....Is this Towers motor parts depot location? Hmmmm,...if not, what could it be?

Re: crashes in Canada. No crash is a good crash, regardless of country. Just watch out for perma-frost when flying north of the border. Is hard like concrete!

I think Tower's western US warehouse is in Sparks (Right near Reno). Pretty much everything I've ordered from them has come from there. Could be just airplane stuff or specific types of things, I suppose.
