Where is this contest?

Hi Doug,

Don't know when someone with the actual precise knowledge will answer, but I believe the contest is held on a small airport grounds somewhere in the vicinity of Montezuma Iowa. That's about 10 miles south of I80 and about half way between Des Moines and Iowa City.

Hope that's a little help

Montezuma, IOWA. About 60 miles East of DesMoines, 11 miles South of I80 on Hwy 63.

Drive straight through town on Hwy 63 (I think). The contest is at the Sig airfield by Maxy and Hazel's house.

That's correct Fred. The airfield is about 2 miles south of Montezuma, Iowa on Hwy.63. It's right along the east side of the highway. You can't miss it! And yes, Hazel Sig lives right there at the airfield.

For those who may be thinking about attending for the first time - looking at an Iowa map, Montezuma is located along Interstate 80 (which runs east-west through the state) about halfway between the cities of Des Moines and Iowa City. It's exit 192 off I-80, to be exact. Then go 8 miles south on Hwy.63 into Montezuma. As you pass through town on your way to the airfield, you will see the SIG factory on your left in about the middle of town.

This is the 20th year for this great old contest. Average attendance is between 70-90 pilots.

Hope to see ya,
Mike Gretz, CD

I believe that a few years ago we actually had over 110 stunt entries. This is the funnest contest of the year, bar none. I have been to all but one (I think this is the 19th) and look forward to it each year.
Two Nights, Two Days of Model airplanes, Tall Stories and a continous party. Bring a tent, cooler full of beer and camp out under the stars. (some of the darkest skies for you astronomers among us).
I'll be there,
Bill Calkins

Mike,
I will be there sometime on Friday and look forward to seeing all my friends at the Sig Contest. Can’t wait to set under the stars and watch satellites (and other space junk) go streaking by overhead.

See Ya soon,
Mikey

I just want to say what a wonderful time I had out there in Iowa. It was worth the drive in every way.

Mike and all the SIG crew did a wonderful job.

The SIG contest was my second contest as a pretty raw beginner. I've had much better days, (engine runs) but I still had a great time. Everyone was encouraging and helpful.

It’s a lot more imposing to fly in front of people than I ever though it would be, especially all the advanced and expert guys. With my limited skills, even practice flights made me jumpy. Now I have met lots of people, I was finally starting to relax by Sunday. I never seen racing, combat or carrier and that was a real treat.

My wife and kids are already planning for next year. I've got lots of work to do.

I want to thank the guy that gave me the prop when I broke my last one, Mike for not giving away my wallet when I left it at sign in, SIG for the gallon of fuel I won as a door prize and all the judges, and anyone that helped, shared their shade.

The Sig Contest was outstanding this year as it always is. I felt that it was the best in recent recent years with respect to temperature, humidity, wind and food! Lots of excellent flying and swapping of ideas and stories. A big thanks to all of the people at Sig Mfg. for putting this one on, Mike Gretz for a great job as CD, Hazel and Maxey for the use of the airport and to all of the runners-judges-tabulators-pit bosses for making it a smooth and fun contest. I look forward to being there next year.

Thanks to Mike Gretz and the entire Sig organization for another wonderful event. Thanks to Maxey and Hazel for the use of their airstrip and facilities.

Unfortunately, I could only attend Sunday's PAMPA events. Some superb flying was seen again! Buzz Paricka had an awesome weekend with a 2nd place in Classic (Sat.) and 1st place in Advanced. He wowed all of us Adv pilots and we gave him the appropriate amount of grief.

The LG placement on my Mustang has always been suspect. After flipping over on both landings Sunday, I decided, it's time to do something about it.

Speaking of Mustangs, did everyone see the Mustang flown by the Advanced pilot (name?) with the wonderful detailed paint job and the Fox 35 exhausting through a header stytem into scale-like exhaust pipes. What a gorgeous piece of work!

Combat returned this year with crowd pleasing action.

Art Johnson had a great weekend in the Carrier circle. I think he placed in every event (won 2).

Congrats to Jerry 'WHO' Meyer for placing 3rd in open sport race and completing BOTH (that's 2) patterns in stunt!!!

I understand the food Saturday night was superb. This dinner was catered by 'The Apple Basket', an excellent restaurant in Montezuma.

Many thanks to the volunteer judges who roasted in the sun both days.

Thanks again Mike,

Fred

I thought that it was a really good contest although there was not quite enough breeze for my liking. My best flight was late in the advanced class on sunday afternoon. Ah well, the Sig people had no control on that.
