Norvel Head on a Cox

Guys I'm sure this is old news, but using the search feature I couldn't find what I needed. I noticed while working on my cox reedie, the head,shims and plugs from my Norvel 061 seem to fit perfectly. Has anybody tried this? Any performance advantage?

It works, and will deliver a performance bost. I still think you're better off to install a Galbreath head and Nelson plug.

However, recent word suggests the Nelson plug and head clamp works even better.

Personal experience with NorVel plugs is that most take lots of current to light, even the newer sport plug. Seal requires secure tightening.

Startup price may seem high, but apparently the plug-element part is very durable, and the clamp ring won't wear out.

The only caution I've heard is that on the NorVel engines with the alumina coating, make sure your battery lead contacts the plug element post and base. The alumina isn't a good conductor.

Along those lines, a few years ago on one of these forums a guy was comparing a Norvel (not sure if BM or AME) .049 to a Tee Dee .049. On one of his tests he swapped heads between the two engines and BOTH engines gained RPM...go figure.

Even stranger, when C*x (actually it was Cox then) was developing the Conquest 15, the piston and cylinder were interchangeable with the Rossi 15. When you swapped the parts, both engines gained rpm. Never did figure that one out.

In the strange department, Duke Fox had one unit of his .25 that outran any other that he had tested. he kept that one in a safe and kept trying to figure out why. Even changing the backplate would cost serious rpm. Guess that one just hit every dimension perfectly for optimum run.

Do use anti-seize compound with the Galbreath heads/Nelson plugs, though. If you've ever had a stuck plug.. Eegh..
