Scale-Stunt awards at VSC-19

There's been some question about what will qualify for those "Best Scale Entry" awards in Old Time & Classic at the next VSC. So here are some examples that WILL and WILL NOT qualify:

YES:
Previously seen entries like the Aeronca C-3, DH-4, Spirit of St. Louis, Bellanca Flash -- plus any Sterling 'C' Series, Berkeley or other kit design (suitably lightened, of course). In other words, those with true scale outline and which can barely stagger through some maneuvers and are rarely capable of completing the entire pattern.

NO:
"Eyeball-scale" P.A. entries having thick airfoils, increased wing and stab area plus other features enabling them to perform the entire pattern. (Yes, this includes that B-26 Marauder...awesome as it may be.)

Well, let's put it this way:

If no actual Scale models show up, I'll then consider the "sorta' Scale" entries.

(Note: Some actual scale models were designed with symmetrical airfoils. That's not a problem.)

I like the name! Sorta Scale.

My Sassy Saucer is exact scale, right down to the Missle Mist fuel, but the original, full-scale, galactic taxi crashed in Sedonna. What sort of documentation to I need to provide? Design dates? Magazine article or advertisement? Any documentation required of the full-scale, mother ship? Thanks, Iain

There are a slew of Hobby Helper scale plans from the 40's that ought to qualify. Many of them have symmetrical airfoils. I've collected about a dozen of these plans over the past 15 years off eBay. They aren't easy plans to acquire. So the models should be pre- '53? -- Iain

For Old Time, pre-'53. For Classic, any time before '70.

I think that "any" isn't the word you were looking for, Mikey, if I may point out that many C-series and Berkeley kits aren't pre-'53. Perhaps a note to this point?

Well, according to some pre 53 Air Trails, Sterling put out about four or five scale planes and two will kinda stunt, the SE5A and the Nieuport 28. I have the SE5A almost ready to test fly.

As far as I can determine (or--oh, boy--remember!) the Sterling C-Series kits eligible for Old Time are the Monocoupe, Mr. Mulligan, Pete, SE-5, Waco, Polish Fighter and Ryan S-T. I did see SE-5s and Wacos compete at a June 1950 contest in Millville, NJ.

I'm not completely certain about the Polish Fighter and Ryan, so if anyone knows for sure we'd appreciate hearing about them.

Sterling's Fokker D-7 is from 1954. Their Nieuport 28 came along much later -- although it's based on the one featured in a late '40s (?) or early '50s issue of Mechanix Illustrated. All other C-Series kits are eligible for Classic only.

Berkeley kits eligible for OTS include the Minnow, Cessna 195, 35" Bearcat, 40" Thunderbolt and POSSIBLY the T-28, though I'm not certain about that last one.

And as Ian Neillands pointed out, there is a host of Air Trails and Hobby Helpers plans (M.A.N., too) from the '40s and early '50s that may be of interest. Bart Klapinski's Fleet bipe, for example, is a Chuck Hollinger design from a 1951 Air Trails. Jim Hunt's Travel Aire bipe was published in a 1952 M.A.N. -- and there are loads of others out there.

Working on a plane right now, should be eligeable for the Old Time class. I'm pretty sure it will fly but don't know if it will do the pattern. It really looks slick though and hopefully should be a lot of fun. RJ

Would a Hemstrought PT-19 or Still Stuka qualify??
I understand they are actually semi-scale but could they be sneeked in anyway? (is sneeked really a word???????????)

Not for these particular awards. Those two "sorta-scale" designs, and others like them, are of course eligible for the Pilots' Choice Concours, but they're not Scale. (Although I've seen pix of your PT-19, and if anything qualifies for a Concours award, that's it.)

Among you, Ron Burn and Al Rabe (not to mention the B-26), I may have to consider adding awards for "Best 'Eyeball' Scale" entry.

Same deal would apply: model must make at least one Official flight at VSC-19 in order to become eligible.

Let me think about it....
