CG for Flite-Streak

Hi,

I'm bulid two 42" Flite-Streaks. The plans do not show the location of the CG. The main spar appears to be the proper, if not a good, location.

Any help would be welcomed.

On the Peacemaker (also designed by GMA) the main spar is a good place to start.

Except for the wingtip shapes, the Flite Streak I am pretty sure is just an exact scaled-up Peacemaker (Or the peacemaker is a scaled-down Flite Streak?)

Add weights to the back to make it twitchy - if you want.

On the main spar may be a bit "twitchy"; I'd suggest starting about 1½" back from the LE, or maybe 1-3/4", and working your way rearward as desired.

I've always used the widest part of the airfoil.

George placed the big Flite Streak CG at the rear of the wood leading edge. Mine is about 1/2 inch back from there and it is very stable and does pretty good squares. Might move it back 1/8 inch. Personally, I would not attempt to fly one with the CG on the spar. I know that others with better reflexes than I have fly them with the CG that far back.

A good starting place for any of the older designs is at 15% Mean Chord.

Eureka ! I have found it !

Being a packrat, I felt that I had the Flite-Streak plans. Well, I found them. And guess what? Both the F-S AND F-S Jr. show the CG at the spar. I quote from the plans:

Note: For the experienced flyer, balance the model at C.G.

For the beginner learning to stunt, model should be nose heavy when held at the C.G.

I know that I've read here that certain plans had the wrong c.g.

But the plans bear out what was said - forward for a tame plane, on the spar for a "lively" plane!

The last one I built (years ago) had the CG about on the spar - but then I liked them like that

GMA told me: "Start with the cg forward and then move it back until the plane turns as you like. It's your airplane, you have decide how you want it to respond.".

Very sound advice indeed.

I have original Flite Streaks plans provided to me by the now departed "O.S."

The balance point is called out as being 3.25 inches from the leading edge.

Anyone who uses this information in bench trimming their own Flite Streak is wished well.

The balance point I strive for is exactly half that shown on my plans: 1.625 inches from the leading edge.

Some will like it more forward or more to the rear, but above number is quite helpful.
