I have not liked the way wheel pants are shown to be mounted in most of the kits with this type of gear. I have not done wheel pants in the past (since flying stunt) and always hated them in Pylon as they were a maintenance nightmare! With Carbon Gear (from Windy, Eather, etc...) and fiberglass pants from Brodak (15.00) or Eather (50.00?) I decided to do one on this year’s airplane. The method is not my invention just the application to stunt as this is pretty much the way we did it in pylon.
Pics are self explanatory for the most part. The only thing not shown in the photos is the ply pieces that will be glued into the pants to lock them in place when all is squared up and ready to nail down. I also wanted a way to change the wheels easily as I wear out these foam wheels quite often. The only part that is home made is the axle and it is easy but does require a lathe. I will make a few if people are interested. I do not want to do this CNC for just a few but if a lot were ordered I would set up and make a run.
Wheels have to be drilled out for the axle. I used a 4-40 but 6-32 would also work for the hard landings that might occur.
This set up would work fine on Aluminum gear as well, maybe even better.
Excuse the ink marks as I have not wiped them off yet.
I tighten the axle(made from hex stock) with a old cox plug wrench. I do not tighten it until the axle bites into the gear but tight enough that together with locktite does the job.
