clunk

My Super Chipmunk has stalled for the last time during a maneuver...I hope.
I have been blaming the tank which was an old 4 oz wedge, so I have now removed the tank and am about to put a 3 oz Hayes Clunk tank in its place.
I have never used a clunk before. Are there any suggestions?

I don't have any suggestions on the clunk tank (Some like them, others hate them.) But if you had an old wedge tank (probably baffle) I would suggest you try a uniflow wedge tank. There can be all sorts of problems with any tank, but if it is an old one, I would suggest trying a new one which may be easier to fit. 3 ounces isn't a lot of fuel if that is all the clunk tank is going to hold.

I just tried a clunk tank for the first time and had a problem with engine running out only half the fuel. Put our stunt heads together and found the uniflow tube too close to the back. A 1/2 to 3/4 inch was the answer. Also make sure the tubing is real flexible so the clunk moves freely. I wish I had tried the plastic clunk tanks sooner, it worked great. Now where do you get a 3 oz. tank? I thought they only came in 2,4,6,8, oz sizes. I used the flask type in a built up bodied plane and have seen the other kind used on profiles. Metal tanks have always worked well for me and they come in the oddball sizes needed for Stunt. Just keep at it and ask for help, I always have a dozen questions rolling around in my simple mind. The Hayes 3 oz. Clunk was in a box in my garage...who knows where it came from!! I did take the old black rubber tubing out of the tank and replace it with the most flexible tubing I had. I also shortened it a bit as the clunk was jamming against the back of the tank.
I'll be trying it today...wish me luck!

Nils Norland did an item for SN in the last year or so on how to set up a clunk for stunt. Or he can e-mail you the pictures. I know hw has used them with great success. Not at home right now, so I can't give you the magazine date, but will later today.

Later now, see May/June 2002 Stunt News, page 78 for pictures of Nils' setup. Works for me.

Does the plane fly leaner when upside down vs right side up ?

Once I got my Taff wedge tank at the right height, all engine
failures were the engine and not the tank (too much compression).

My Fox started the drop dead routine as soon as I put larger props on it.

Does it eat glow plugs ?
