Yes I have tried it on normal wood trim for the house, and it works. Mainly is to harden up wood so that it will take a paint prime.
However a there is a product which hardens balsa which is Balsa Rite for Film (originally by Coverite, now by Tower). A friend thinks it's the best stuff - better than dope, and uses it for indoor gliders to harden up the balsa surface so it doesn't ding as much. It was marketed as a surface preparation for plastic covering material, so it doesn;t have any adhesive qualities like the original Balso Rite for fabric (or micafilm) .Unfortunately it appears to be disappearing from Tower, so maybe it is another casulty of air qualtity rules.
