Pull test scale?

Does anyone have a source for a moderate cost scale we can use for pull tests? Local supplies seem to have dried up. Thanks!

Fish scale? Or don't they make fish that big in your neck of the woods?

Yes. Agree, Len.

The scale doesn't know what is on the other end. It could be anything from Roseanne to a Sterling Spitfire.

Either way, it will break.

Brodak bought some nice 0-50 lb small, red anodized scales from Cabella(sic)Outfitters,then mounted them to a board with a handle cutout. Best I have seen lately. Jim Damerell

Bill, Jim is right, Cabela's has a nice selection of reasonbly priced spring scales (IMHO) that will work for pull tests. See this link :

I have the 50lb Shimano scale and it's a good buy for $25. I do a lot of salt water fishing, and the Shimano's internals are stainless steel. The Rapala 50lb Pro-Guide scale can be had for $15 but I suspect the guts are not stainless at that price. It does have indicator that records the highest weight on each weigh attempt which would be a neat feature for pull tests.

In any case, don't be tempted to buy a digital scale. Very impractical when doing a pull test. Because a pulltest is not a static thing, the display is never 'at rest'. Impossible to be accurate and a real risk to pull too much...

I was at harbor Freight today and saw a 0-50 lb scale,spring type,for 8$.The scale was very flight box friendly as far as size and the lanyard hook was already crimped on so it would not get lost.There is also a "T" handle with a ring that could be used as a wrist strap point.This scale had a plastic slider that would indicate the pull weight achieved untill reset. I hope this helps.

Nobody has reported on the pull test fixture they use at VSC. Too long to describe here, but it can be made with a few pine boards and some weights to correspond to the pull test requirements for the various engine sizes.

Does anyone have a drawing of this simple device?

I think someone had one of these scales out at our field a couple of years back. One of our members said it was originally designed for checking the pull strength on a bow string.
