The Hunt

I have been flying, for sport and fun several Brodak warbirds including the most recent, a LaGG 3. The Lagg, among other unsavory habits, had a terrible hunt, almost impossible to fly level, even in relatively calm conditions. Moving the CG forward seemed to help very little. I assumed something, somewhere was out of alignment, though everything seemed to check OK and figured it was destined to be a wall hanger.

A few days ago, the only really good stunt flier in the area, took a look, noticed that I had tweaked the flaps slightly to correct an outboard wing down condition and advised that he thought that was the answer to the hunting problem in that unequal air flow on the flaps were causing the elevator, being smaller in area, to move with the flow. Sounded hokey to me, but being desperate, I put on a trim tab, squared away the flaps, flew it yesterday in good conditions and sure enough, it's suddenly steady as a rock-I was amazed.

On this guys advice, I had also removed all rudder and engine offset and the yaw is gone-Now it flies really pretty well despite being maybe a little overweight.

So anyway, if you have tweaked and your airplane looks like a yo yo on the end of the lines in attempted level flight, you might think about untweaking.
