So many types of hinges!

Newbie question... Again!

What are the preferred hinges for our ships? And why?

I love using the easy-hinges on my R/C stuff, are these okay?

The "Klett" type nylon hinges used in R/C and U/C are very common. Also made by DuBro. I do not and don't know of anyone that will, recommend the straight or dowel looking plastic hinges. No strength. Also many still use the "Z" type cloth hinges. I use the hinges sold by Tom Morris. They are made of Dacron, are very strong, do not dry out or rot, and can be applied with Ambroid or similar glues. I have seen them applied with AC type glues too. I have seen the "z" type hinges made of Polyspan. These litterally disappear after doping and covering.
When using the hinge type, be sure to put a very small drop of oil on the wire so the epoxy will not cause them to become solid. What I like about the cloth hinges is that I apply them side by side the entire length of the flap or elevator and this seals the hinge line. Beats using Scotch tape.

I once used the ca easy hinges on a Twister. They worked and were strong enough, but the added a stiffness to the controls that made it more difficult to fly the plane with great precision. I wouldn't use them for PA, but for a trainer they should be fine.

"Klett" style as well as cloth seem to work best for me. I have seen those pin style hinges used by several of the top dogs, but it isn't as common as the klett.

If you're serious about PA, use the best systems that will keep your control system as free as possible.

Agree with John. Stay away from CA hinges. Stiffness is putting it mildly. You might as well glue the el to the stab, given the immobility they create.

I made this mistake once, and it will be only once. Because it is Shame On Me, the second time.
