I missed the King Orange this year, big bummer, the wifey and I both got knocked on our collective keasters with the flu. Anyone out there assembling the results to post here?? The weather forcast looked interesting to say the least! Anyone have to de-ice their wings?

I dont know the results but I know two guys who drove from Dallas TX to get one official then hop in the car and come home due to cold windy conditions.

BRRRRrrrrrrrrrrr is an understatement
All in all I had a really great time with the guys, but (for me) The first day It was brutely cold with the temps. in the upper 40's and windy. great people though had coffee and donuts,and other hot nibbles
didn't fly the stunter but I did have a chance to fly a fast combat job, would like to say I lost it in the wind but my bad back is the blame for it. must admit it sure sounded good, even that last thump!

Great contest me and Dad's first one back in 5 years lots and lots of fun even though as mentioned it was SO cold!

Expert:
1) Tom Luper Time Machine DS60(?) (won the KOI trophy)
2) Tom Dixon Avanti 60 DS60(?)
3) Kent Tysor Strega T&L60
(These guys finsihed top3 in the contest then top3 in the flyoff in the same order)
The Cuban FAI team was there and they were alot of fun, Enrique(I think that is his name) got 4th.

Advanced:
1) William Davis Dancer T&L 60 (I think he won) he is from the Charlotte NC Area

Intermediat:
1) Mr. Bugsby? sound right?
I finished 4th with an overun and getting blown out of 2 manuvers

Classic:
1) John Simpson Cavalier AeroTiger 36

OTS:
1) Tom Luper Stunt Wagon DS50(?)

That is what I remember off the top of my head!

KOI,

What a blast,, This was a well run contest by any standards,, It was a little cool in the mornings 23 deg on Sat morning, But wind direction was very consistant and steady most of the time.Around mid day the sun would shine and everyone felt better. If you were prepared for cool weather it was not a problem. A hot car parked at runway helped too, but what a good seat to watch flights..

Attendance was above normal with as many as 15 people in certain classes.. Good turnout , good food on site , nice motels and resturants close by.. How could you go wrong...

Lyn and Tom Weedman and the X47 flyers really put on a top class event,can't wait until the next KOI...

Round fuses might make a canted sidewinder mount with radial mount hardware easier though.... if that's what I am looking at here.

As much as I like to see what the Experts are up to, does anyone have the complete results or score board pictures for the rest of classes?? Advanced, Interm, Classic, OTS???

From the X47 Flyers:

We just want to give a huge THANK YOU to all those flyers and non-flyers who came to participate in the KOI this past weekend. Wish we could have arranged for a little warmer temps. It was downright cold for Florida. But, when you are enjoying the company of some of the best folks around (c/l flyers), who cares if it is cold?

The club is very happy with the way the contest went. If anyone has any suggestions for improvements, please feel free to contact me. We welcome any suggestions that will make the contests that we host more enjoyable for the contestants.

I do not have the complete results available to me right at the moment, but I will run Lyn Weedman down in the next couple of days and then post them on this forum.

Once again, a big thanks to all!!!

P.S.-We are working on plans for a contest on the first or second weekend in April at the Tift County Airport in Tifton, Ga. We will get word out to everyone just as soon as things get finalized. The area where we used to fly at the airport has been resurfaced and "the fence" removed. Should be a great place to fly.

I would like to personally thank Bill Hodges, Tommy and Lynn Weedman and the rest of the X-47 crew for the great KOI Stunt Meet. Even though the temperature hovered about the high 40s and the winds never got less than 10 MPH both days and we all risked sunburn, it was a wonderful way to start the New Year. I thoroughly enjoyed myself as well as used up a whole stick of Chapstick from winburn. I took some pictures and should have them scanned and up for view in the next 24 hours.

I want to know if everybody is thawed-out yet from the artic
blast of air that mother nature threw at us for the King Orange?
man was it cold (around 24deg) in the morning and warming up to
around 40deg in the afternoon.also the wind conditions on saturday were not to bad (8 to 10)and sunday (15 to 20).
The King Orange is always a very unpredictable contest as far as
the weather goes but,those of you that attend on a regular
basis know it's a gamble and come prepared for it.This year we
had a good turn out despite the conditions attendance was up and
we had a lot of vetern flyers rejoin us as well some new ones
like the FIA TEAM.
The scoreboard reflected very competitive scores in all classes.
I would like to thank everyone who came to brave the weather conditions and support our event,also I would like to thank the Navy for giving us access to the air field.
I see you guys have already started posting pictures of the
some of the aircraft flown and some of the contestants.
see you at the next one!!!

Saturday was so brisk and cool that both of my NICAD glowplug igniters failed from coldsoaking over the previous evening. I forgot that NICADS do not tolerate cold. Warmed them up in the motel room Saturday evening, recharged them and then kept them in my shirt pocket on Sunday. Worked fine. To keep my hands from getting cold during flying, I wore a set of golf gloves. Worked great and did not interfere with the feel of the handle. Starting the engines was difficult too. I remembered to take some lighter fluid for priming. Used it for all flights and had no problem making a quick start, though I did cheat a little by using my electric starter if the engines were balky after a couple of flips.

Tonight, I will post some of the photos I took at the field.

The Cavalier is a Cavalier 670 Lite built by Tom Morris and sold to Dennis Piwowarski of Arlington VA. Dennis loans it to me (Tom McClain) to fly in Advanced. It has a PA-40 side exhaust, weighs 53 oz and flys great.

Looks like there were a lot of very nice models there this year. I just could not make it, I am still not back in the air after the move to Orlando. Bill Rich and I are talking about beginning to practice together, so I am sure I will be flying again real soon.

I had considered the drive up on Sunday to be a spectator, but cold KOI's are bad enough when you are flying and HAVE to be there. I was glad to see the Miami guys made the trip, and congrats to Tom Luper. I was worried that one day he would start flying something besides a Viking.
