Slant Plug Fo x .15

Ok, I'm just getting back into contol line flying after having been gone for, oh about 30 years. Right now I'm building a Brodak Flying Clown and getting ready to bolt a slant plug Fox .15 on it. This is an engine that I've had since the mid 60's but has never been on an airplane. I'm using it because it's what I've got and I'm trying to keep cost down. The question is, based upon some of the posts, this isn't the best engine in the world. Should I use it or suck up and go buy something else. Another question. I have, also from a long time ago, a Enya .19RC engine. What would I need to do to use this engine on a C/L airplane. Sorry for the dumb questions, but I'm learning all over again . . .

I don't know how big the Clown you're putting the 15x on is, but I have had one of these engines forever and it still pulls a couple of planes around just fine. When it sits for a couple of years, it is a little hard to start, but I think that is normal of most model engines. I have never had any problems at all and it has been wrecked a dozen times. Never taken it apart. Never changed head gaskets. It has only had three or four different glow plugs in its life. Note that you do have to use a short glow plug or put two plug gaskets on a long one.

Don't over prop your Fox. Use a 8x4 or 7x6. They are not as powerful as today's engines but they can be excellent sport engines.
It should be a good match for the Flying Clown.
The Enya .19 is also a good engine but, in my opinion, a bit large and heavy for a Clown. The Clown was made for an .09 to .15.

Your Fox is an excelent match for your Flying Clown. I have an earlier Steel Fin Fox .15 (fairly similar to yours) on a Jr Flite Streak, and it works well.

Your Fox .15X will make the Flying Clown a pretty hot little ship, just what you need in Kansas in the Spring. Some zipping around will make slower models much easier. The Jr. Flite Streak, Peacemaker (profile version), Shark .15 or Sig's Acromaster will be better stunters and only a little more building. For your Enya .19, it may not be worth spending the money to have a venturi made and buying a NVA for it, shipping, etc. Some throttles you can adjust the idle stop to lock it full open, or you can put a spring or link to the throttle lever. A Brodak "Veco Tomahawk" would be my pick for the .19. Steve

If you are looking to buy a Tomahawk, the kit is on a waiting list. They sent me one by mistake. I thought it might be one I would have difficulty selling, so sent it back. Had to reorder it the next day for a customer. Sold three more since. Brodak ran out of the kits and put it on hold while they were developing their new kits. Now that the Peacemaker is out (still waiting for the 1/2A version) the Tomahawk should be back in production shortly. I have one pre-order on hold right now.

Would that be the old Top Flite Peacemaker, or the published profile version or something else?

Hello OS,

I sure hope it's the full fuselage version, but not the way Top Flite made it with the moulded fuselage. The original that GMA published in MAN is a great looking ship, powered by an Oliver Tiger .15 diesel. That would equate to an excellent stunt ship for a modern .15.
The profile version was published in England. It looks a lot like a Flite Streak, sized between the full size and the Jr.

I had a Slat Plug .15 on a Brodak Jr Lightning Streak and it did fine. Very fast on 52 ft lines with loads of tension. Unfortuntaly I tried flying last week with 22 mile gusts (emphasis on tried). I made 1 flight and should have rolled up the lines and went home right then but I pushed my luck and fueled up again. I'm not quite sure what happened but I ended up way to high on the upwind side, lines went slack and you know the rest.Plane hit the pavement so hard about half the color on the wings flaked off on impact,looked like a puff of red smoke. Plane was hardly hurt but engine was a loss. Split down the case, mounting lugs on one side snapped off, needle valve broken. Oh well I quess I'll see how it flys with an ENYA .09.
