took the easy way out with the krylon finish,not a bad job,not very fuel proof and heavy.....now ive had a conflict with the ground and am once again repairing my overweight tutor.problem is butrate dope eats the krylon,quite a mess ...! i have some wing bays to recover with silkspan HELP!!!..thanks,jerry

It almost sounds like it's time to recover it. The wing I'm working on right now got recovered before it was ever finished because some of the covering stuck to the spars and got sanded through. (It was supposed to be supported by the cap strips. Didn't get it shrunk tight enough.) The time saved and improved appearance made it an easy decision. Not as easy with an older airframe, but if the airframe is worth salvaging, the savings in time and weight may be worth it. And it will likely be easier and less frustrating than patching. You'll have to make that assessment, but the mixed paint problem is for all intents insurmountable in my experience.
I agree. At this point about all you can do is peel the wings & re-cover with plastic film. Either that, or just cover the holes with film. Anything that will shrink silkspan will eat enamel so far as I know. On the bright side, if you're still hitting the ground from time to time, film is easy to repair & your Tutor will lose weight.

I have seen in the local art supply store a product called
Krylon "High Gloss". It is supposed to set dry to the touch in
10-12 minuts. Is this a form of "Enamle" or since it drys
pretty fast is it a hybred polyurethane or could it actually
be Acrylic Laquer?? The can doesn't specify anything except
that it has chemicals known to cause birth defects. As far as
I know that's just about any kind of paint! Why won't these
paint companies tell you if it's Enamel, Polyurethane or Laquer anymore????

I heard from Jerry the other day, by email, and he said that my suggestion worked great! And wanted me to post the idea here.Only problem is that I sent him an email and gave two ideas of things to try, and he didn't say which was the one that worked. Of the two, I believe the most likely to succeed was based on Leonard's comments in an older thread about refinishing...use lacquer thinner, acetone, etc, to remove the old until you get rid of the old...or in this case, all that isn't butyrate dope. Then you can patch with dope and refinish with dope and then Krylon. Still, I hope Jerry will post and fill in the gaps. Steve
EDIT: OH, THAT idea! The question may be how to get some brush-on Krylon clear, when it comes in a spray can only (as far as I know). Just spray it out of the can into a small jar. I thought this point needed to be made clear (no pun intended

SUCESS!!!..i used a sugestion from steve and used clear krylon just like dope to attach the silkspan to the damaged wing bays,i put the silkspan on dry and used a water mist to shrink it.then used dope just on the silkspan for the final shrink and seal,looks great and ready for the krylon finish,hope this helps others with the same problem...thanks for the input...jerry
