VSC Sleeper

Although not a huge surprise, the most improved flyer I saw at Tucson was Dave Sabon from San Diego flying a new Olympic. Kind of snuck up on the crowd on Saturday but plunked down a very nice 544 point flight on Sunday. I had noticed his good work casually on Saturday and made a point to watch more closely on Sunday. It was the real deal! Well done Dave.

Second most impressive sleeper was Leroy Black. Flying a Sirotkin Spacehound I saw a very competent flight on Saturday foiled only by a flame out during the Clover. Another guy getting his act together.

SSW's own PTG is getting better almost scary fast. His craftsmanship and finish have been top drawer almost from the get-go. Recent improvement in his patterns seem destined to make him a force with which to be reckoned.

It's really slick to see top competitors from other disciplines finding their way to the top of the stunt ranks. Other names which immediately come to mind are Howard Rush (another raw hamburger and rusty nails type from the combat ranks) and Richard Oliver who surfaced like a breeching whale...from out of the depths to the very top...overnight.

Dave's Olympic is the one with white, red and black trim, AMA 116965.

I had been flying for 20 years when I met Dave in San Diego in 95. That day was the first time I ever the AMA pattern done. Learned more that day than in the first 20 years combined!

He's a great guy who REALLY spends a lot of time and effort on this sport. I don't think he ever frequents this spot, but I'll be sure and pass along the sentiment when I call him next week (although I seem to recall he told me you had said something to him about watching his flight).

I guess the Cholla Choppers decided to award my son Scott (the Kid-new nick assigned by Hib, courtesy Cyberflyer) a Sig Magnum kit (from the estate of Ed Southwick?), but we left too early on Sun to know that. Dave spoke up for me, collected the kit and is sending it to me (did I just type "me"?, I meant him!). Just another small token of how we all do seem to get along pretty well helping each other in this sport (no matter WHAT you read here on occassion!!!).

He also chat with me at length after my flight on Sat, and I scored a hundred points higher on Sun! I guess you could say he's my mentor.

Congratulations! The Kid is so earnest in his efforts and by all accounts so well mannered that he deserves all the encouragement we can give him.
