I'm considering getting a SuperTigre 51 to power a Magnum. What kind of experiences is anyone willing to share? Any comparisons to the ST60?

Ray:

If you are speaking of the latest ST .51 with the square head, they are terrific performers stock. One should haul the Magnum about just fine! 'round here, a 11.5 X 4 pitch prop seems okay. The stock muffler should be replaced with a "chip" or, better yet, a unit from Randy Holcroft or Big Art (lite tube types).

The older .51's, in a .60 case, work well, too, as do the .56's, but with the old "voodoo" type 13 X 6 Rev Up props cut to 12" or some such.

Have fun!

O.K. here is my experience for your purusal. I have a T&L modified ST G.51 that I used in my slightly modified Sig Magnum.
The engine would pull the plane through the pattern running in four stroke and breaking only slightly in vertical and overhead manuvers. Fuel consumption for the pattern as modified was
4 & 5/8 ounces of fuel. Keep the weight of the Magnum as low as possible and especially under 60 ounces. My favorite prop to use on the the T&L modified ST .51 is a 12 inch Bolly three blade, repitched to 5.0 and 5.2 at the tips, cut down to 11 & 5/8 diameter. The engine is now in my Classic Shark .45 and pulls it through the pattern almost exactly like it did the Magnum - using the same prop. My Magnum was a good performer even though it took about 1.75 ounces of tip weight to get enough line tension above 45 degrees. The Magnum has equal pannels! Curiously, the Shark .45 is an even better performer than the Magnum was, but they are pretty close. My ST .51 as modified seems to have nearly the same pulling power as my Aero .51/w pipe does! However, the Aero exhibits better behavior by not winding up even is pretty stout winds.

I have no knowledge of how a stock ST G.51 would run, and I wouldn't even want to know after experiencing this very good
re-work of the engine by Tom Lay.

The real question is where are you going to find one other than the RC version, which has different cylinder timing, and you don't want. The CL version is "temporarily out of production", if you believe the importer. I was considering one (IF I could find one), but did not want to fool with a ringed engine anyway. Might I suggest a Stuka Stunt Works modified ASP .53? I just got mine. More POWER! Steve

I beleive that as an affordable stock "big block" the ST G-51 C/L is an exceptional bargain. I have had several ST-G51 Magnum combinations and they were enjoyable. Several is the key word here as my piloting skills have not kept up with the equipment. My airplane this year is a Magnum L/F (lost foam wing) powered by a ST G-51 C/L. The motor is box stock except for the Dixon venturi and modified NVA location. Less tank shimming. It runs a Rev-Up 13/5 cut to 12.5/5 or a BY&O 13/5. Smith Magnum tank, and Winship controls finish it out. Painted with Brodak dope it came out at 56 oz. The fuselage height is stretched ala pipe tunnel (approximately 1"). I am looking forward to flying it. Tail end of last year I put in some lap flights starting to get it trimmed. I'll E-Mail a picture. My plan is to continue to refine my building skill using the Magnum planform. If interested Bob Hunt has the lost foam jig available for the magnum. Several friends here in Cleveland also use the G-51. Richa Alasandro has a Heartbeat Models Sukhoi profile with a true stock C/L G-51 that hasn't missed a beat in four years. Its a big profile and the G51 has a growl that matches the Sukhoi. I wouldn't hesitate to give this combination a recomendation. Give it a try, you could do a lot worse.

The ST-51 C/L is a engine that you can use RIGHT out of the box. Mine I had reworked by Tom Dixon. I use sig champion 10 fuel,5oz tank, with a BY&O 12x6 cut to 11.5x6 with square tips. I run it at 9500-9700 rpm's and I have this engine on my 50oz Cardinal. The engine has LOTS of power and is VERY user friendly. Tom Lay also will rework your engine. ANY good stunt guru rebuilder is good. Scott
