I bought this McCoy 35 Blue Head RC engine on ebay last week. It arrived yesterday not in very good shape. Is this the original carburator? You can see what is left of the carburator on the right hand side of the blue head engine between the 2 props. It looks more like an OS carburator to me. It does not look like the carburator that comes with the RC Red Head engines. I took the needle valve and spray bar out of the RC carburator and made this CL venturi during lunch today at work. You can see the needle valve in the venturi of the Blue Head engine. The piston was in the engine backward and the head was backwards too compaired to the Red Head engine so I turned them both around I am not sure that was the correct thing to do but it seems logical. I made new gaskets and a crankshaft bushing too. Compression is great and it runs excellent. Very good running Blue Head engine and it sounds a little different than the Red Head engine maybe because the exhaust ports are 5 square holes instead of 1 large exhaust port. The intake ports are 3 square holes on this Blue Head engine.

I noticed the intake ports on the Blue Head engine are 1/2 the area of the intake ports on the Red Head engine. Does the smaller area have any effect on the way the Blue Head engine runs compaired to the Red Head engine?

I notice this Blue Head engine has lighting bolts on the side. Is this engine the same as the Red Head Lighting Bolt engine? The ebay ad said it is a Blue Head but the paint looks more like Green to me.

Gary,

(Must be the day for unrelated Cranes to reply to you...)

The needle looks more like K&B from the late '60s/early '70's. K&B carbs back then also had the idle air bleed screw horizontal and forward of the venturii hole.
Yes, the reduced sleeve bypass area probably does affect how the engine runs for you -- makes it a bit milder, if anything. The more significant difference with the sleeve ports is their relative height. The exhaust port top must be nearer top dead center than the top of the bypass port(except for the C-series STs, any others??).

The square holes suggest to me that the cylinder was designed for a ringed piston. The vertical bridges were intended to keep the ring ends fom hanging up in the port windows. These would be very wide ports for the old-type iron rings if the bridges didn't keep them compressed inside the cylinder inner diameter...

If it seals and runs well, you did good work and earned the enjoyment you'll get from it.

I am looking at mine that was bought new in 1969 and it is different. The air bleed screw comes out the front of the carb body not the top as on this yours. The needle valve on mine is the standard McCoy spring unit.

Looking at it again and it does look a bit different. Sort of old Enya but with a flaired intake. Flaired intake is K+B to my knowledge, which is limited and fairly often trampled on. I'd agree with Lou on this one.

Just keepin it in the family name. Could be Merco, but I'm not familiar with old Mercos.

Dang! We got cranes aflyin' everyplace!
I don't have the ad photos in front of me at the moment, but didn't HI Johnson sell the "Dynamix" R/C carbs as a separate accessory part for motors for a brief time in the '60s?

Hey, Jake! How be ya? High Desert Sandhill Crane, here.

Actually, I mis-identified the carb type, or did I??

VECO 19BB RC is the carb type in the photo. Not K&B... or did K&B ever change the VECO markings all the years they built and sold the engine?

I don't know if it is from a 19 or larger VECO (or K&B)(whatever), but the type is certain. I have a couple of VECO 19BBs, their boxes, and at least one set of mfr instructions. I don't recall any others that were USA-style diecast, with the horizontal air-bleed screw just-so, the K&B type aluminum-barrel needle and that straight-taper flared upper inlet.

I thought I recognized it, checked the VECO engine and its instruction sheet to confirm. At least the memory still works, sometimes... <g>

I have the exact carb that came on a G-20 .35 Super Tigre. I don't know if mine was factory or added, but it does fit perfectly. William

I found 2 McCoy 35 RC blue head engines 1 has the same carburator as my engine with 2 adjusting screws for idle and air. It has the same needle valve too.

The carburator on the other McCoy engine is almost identical but it has the McCoy type needle valve. It also has only one screw adjustment which appears to be the idle adjustment, no air adjustment.

The metal throttle arm, size and shape are the same on both carburators. Size and shape of both aluminum carburator bodies are the same too.

It appears to me that maybe McCoy had 2 different carburators it used on their engines OR it was swapped out by the user. Sence I found another engine with the same carburator then it must have been a popular thing to do at the time among the guys that used this engine to swap it with another carburator.

Makes no difference to me if it is original or not I like this needle valve and was looking for another one. The needle turns easy and fine tune adjustment is really nice. It seems to me I have seen this needle on other engines on ebay. I have been looking all weeks but I have not seen this carburator and needle valve on another any other engines.

It is possible that the engine companies all bought carburators from carburator manufactures. That is the way it is done in industry. McCoy could have designed their engine so they could buy another compaies RC carburators to fit. Tillitson Manufacture of carburators makes carburators for just about ever small engine you can find, weed eaters, chain saws, go karts, boat motors, leaf blowers, generators, etc.

The NVA is a Veco/K&B unit. The kind that came on my Veco 35s and 19s. I am sure K&B kept using them on the 19 when they bought out Veco.

Well, if we aren't all Cranes, then were Williams in this thread.

If it fits the whole, stick it in and run it, I'm sure it will work. I stuck an Enya in an OS once upon a time.

Currell, a possibility:
My best friend once stripped the glow plug threads on a RH 35. McCoy sent a Blue Head since they are the same (he didn't specify which). Could happen to a Blue Head in reverse.

The "Lightning Bolt", or Custom Stunt, were the last series of Red Heads. .19, .29, .35, and .40. Reported to be just a touch better overall than the earlier ones.

I "almost" won a carb from ebay #3180651679 that is identical to the one I have on my .35 ST (only larger) for the .61 series engines. The carb is made by K&B and is advertized as a new in box K&B Speed Carb, that runs extremely well at high speed, and low as well. Also, it means the carb on my ST .35 is a replacement K&B. It is the same one you show in the pix.

Gary,
Since I gathered the jist of your query to be obtaining more of the NVA assemblies to use in your C/L engines, contact K&B and see if they still stock them. It was the same used in the C/L version of the Veco 19 BB until they quit selling them.

Its interesting that you guys are swapping parts around to get what you want and make things work. I don't know much about these engines yet, if they are original, what can be swapped and what works better or best. If I buy an engine on ebay I have no way to know if its original don't really care as long as it runs or I can make it run. The collectors are the only ones that seem to care if something is original. The collectors give me a hard time on ebay because I don't know what is original and what is not but it seems to me the collectors should know from looking at the picture posted with the ebay ad or ask question before they bid. I sold an item on ebay and I described what I knew about the item which was not very much and the ad said look at the picture and decide what you think. The buyer was mad when he received the item and wanted a refund. "Another collector." I don't feel it was my fault and buyers remorse is no excuse for a refund. Collectors are driving me nuts. If I were to sell a propeller on ebay and the buyer wanted a refund because the propeller is out of balance I think that is unreasonable.
