Good Flyin' day in Huntsville, AL

Good news,

We had a flying session yesterday, Sat 5 May, with 5 flyers flying stunt planes. There are a couple more C/L flyers in Huntsville we need to encourage to come out. We even had an R/C flyer that was out reviving his old C/L stunt planes, and another world class type R/C Giant Scale aerobatic pilot that has exressed an interest in learing to fly C/L planes! Things are starting to look up around here! Any suggstions for a Huntsville, AL C/L club name???

We had a good one in Wichita KS also today. Flew the Novi I several times. There was a slight bit of static electricity occasionally when the puffball clouds would float by, and the wind was under 25 MPH so all-in-all a very good day for flying.

Sounds like a lot of fuel was burned across the country today. Here in the Rocky Mountains it was a gorgeous day for flying. Our ckub, the Utah State Aeromodelors, held a club contest for OT and Classic stunt. The weather was perfect with the wind just enough to blow your slipstream away. There were a few thermals that gave the judges a workout switching places.

"Pete" Peterson won OT with his faboulous Jamison Special powered with a DS .40. This is the same plane Kieth Trostle used to win OT at VSC. Second place went to Georg Swanson flying his All American, not the Sr. with a McCoy 19, managed Second place. Bob Dimick flew an OS .25fp powered Ringmaster to third. This was Bob's first OT competition and he seemed to be smiling all the time.

Classic was won by yours truley flying a Mathis designed Excalibur powered by an OS .35s. I can't really take bragging rights as It was only because my mentor and flying bud, Gordan Delaney, had the misfortune to have an over run. Gordan took second with his Jim Tichey designed Colossus, powered by an ST .51. Even without landing and pattern points, he was only a few points under me, and might have won anyway. It was close.

George Swanson flew his AA to third, and Bob Dimick flew a nice Smoothie with a great Johnson .35 stunt to third place. Bob is still learning the ropes, and will soon get better and more capable.

After the contest, we did some sport flying with several other planes taking to the air. George brought out his fun flying throttled stunter. I flew my Twin Flite Streak. They were still flying when I had to leave.

All in all a great day with only a broken prop being the worst disaster.

Having lived in Alabama, I can think of a few descriptive words that could apply (hot, sweaty, etc) but would probably just suggest "Rocket City Controline Fliers". You already thought of that one, I betcha! Steve

Glad to hear that there is some good activity here in good old AL. We have had a tough time getting everyone on the same schedule here in B'ham, and there is currently only 3-4 of us. How about e-mailing me the next time you guys schedule a session and I will see if any of us are able to come up. edkeller@ mindspring.com

Hi Jim. I went out and flew in old Huntsville today, Mothers Day, and some of the problems with that goofy Dolphin went away, but line tension after the engine died was lost, even down wind. A wheel fell off near the end of the flight, so the landing was different, didn't break the prop, but the wing cracked through the center. Took it home and it is now spare parts. On with the good planes.
