Photos From Whittier Narrows Contest

Fellow modeler Pete Munroe took photos at last weekends contest at Whittier Narrows and we thought you might like to see a few. We didn't get caption info, so perhaps someone here can fill in the data.

First three are of a beautiful Smoothie, signed by Bob Palmer, a Tucker Special, and a Zilch X which we think was built by Jerry Silver.

Sorry, but the paint scheme on the Smoothie is so neat, I am going to steal it for one of my planes. I have never been accused of being original when it comes to painting my planes.

Me too, Ty, I love that paint scheme and the quality is tops. The Smoothie keeps looking better as the years pass.

I am torn between the Smoothie, of which I have built, flown and wrecked one, the Thunderbird, ditto. Both were the early Veco kits before Dumas got them.

Try a Brodak Smoothie. I too have built both from the old Veco kits, and would rate the original T-bird a better flying airplane, but the new Brodak Smoothie (which, according to what I've heard is Palmer's original design, not the Veco version)promises to be a better bird than the old kit, by far. The wing on the Brodak kit gave me some headaches, but came out very, very light and stiff.

The Smoothie was built and flown by Tim Meeks, the Tucker Special was built and flown by Larry Foster (of Tucson) and the Zilch X was indeed built and flown by Jerry Silver.

Thanks for the info, Bill. The silk job on the Zilch is gorgeous, and the structure it reveals shows perfect workmanship. Jerry is a great craftsman.

is there any way to verify the owner of the Zilch X
I have just posted in the classifieds the release of my Zilch X kits
and would like to contact the owner of this beautiful piece of art.
here's an old photo of I think Jim Saftigs Zilch X(I could be mistaken)

You can call Jerry Silver at his home in Beverly Hills, CA...he is listed in the Pampa reference manual.

By the way Bill I love your adjustable pushrod setup I will be installing one in a Magnum I am doing, and when I get to that part I will be posting pictures both here on the forum and on my website in the (My Current Projects page).

Jerry Silvers Zilch is a work of art and the picture only shows part of it. It flies as good as it looks or the pilot made it look so. Jerry won both Classic and Old Time beating the 5 time VSC Champ Bart Klapinski.

The Tucker was Built by Larry Foster and weighs in at 36 or 37 oz. He informend me at the feild that the nose has been stripped and is being refinished due to the paint lifting. He said he was secound in Classic and Old Time.

Bart Finished Third due to Crap in the fuel line (Larry said he would have beat him hands down). Bart says he's going to the Bob Palmer Classic in June hoping to take back the top spot in Old Time. I'll bet Jerry gives him a run for his money.

As for Classic Jerry was in a League of his own.
