engine wear

Down here in the Florida panhandle there is tons of very fine sand blowing around. I think it has all ready destroyed one of my old McCoys, and before I fly any of my newer engines I was wondering if anybody has found some way of filtering the air entering the venturi?

There are air filters sold for venturis. Take a look at this:

I like the Bruline filters and almost always have one on whatever engine I am flying. They come in course and fine. The fine ones equate to a .010" venturi reduction, it is said. I especially like them on inverted engines. A normal choke allows the fuel to drain out on the ground, while with a filter, it soaks the filter. Hit the spinner with a starter and it will start, pulling fuel vapors out of the filter. Works for me, anyway. This is without muffler pressure, which I could see making a difference on your starting drill.

We used to fly C/L combat with Sterling Yaks and P-51s on the beach at Gulfport, MS. Engines were Fox 35. They hit the sand, landed in the surf and all. I never noticed any particular wear from sand, or salt water either.

I never flew models in FL, but my only memories were those little critters on the beach that bite, and the bite lasts for days. (talking about insects, not the ladies).
