We're back...

OK folks, after some head scratching this afternoon, we're back.

The problem was space. We had plenty allocated, but the server itself ran out. Seems an account on the server we share had about 7 Gigs of unread email on it - no doubt most of it SPAM. Leonard contacted the sysadmins to the system, and they found the problem quickly and corrected it.

There are some missing threads. These threads were lost during the time the server was running out of space. I have tried to recover these, but to no avail. When these threads were being edited and rewritten they were truncated beyond beyond recovery.

If you posted and found your thread missing, it was not deleted because of angst or anger, just a server that was flat out of space. Please repost if you have the time.

My thanks to those who emailed Leonard and myself quickly once problems cropped up. My apologies for the lost posts.

As a techie I can honestly say, "been there, done that". I can only remember more than a few all night sessions spent repairing email accounts because someone decided to upload a photo CD of their recent vacation...

First I would echo the sentiments that we all appreciate your efforts and the work entailed.
Second I can confirm that it is necessary to log in again.
May I respectfully suggest that the size of each page of the forum is a little excessive at over 100K? We aren't supposed to post pictures bigger than half that. On my dated system it takes an age to post page 1 and it often pauses after 100K without displaying the page. I counted something like 80 threads on the page. Would it not be a great help to everyone - and drastically reduce your bandwidth - if it was reduced to 50 or less?

Note - the problem yesterday was not due to page bandwidth, but HD space on the partition Leonard's domain shares with other domains on the server hosting the site.

I think rebuilding the data base meant that people had to log in again, but it should keep you logged in now as before. Some may also find their settings changed. Remember that little + or - at the uppef left of the blue bar. That changes the default of how the forum displays for you.

But, at Dave's suggestion I cut the board back to 60 threads per page. This will make each page load quicker if you are using the fully threaded mode. If people do not check in every day, they may find themselves needing to go back to page 2 or 3 to check on all new postings. But that is all right.

We will see how this setting goes.
