Thought you might like to get a peek at how the Hughes H-1 stunter turned out. I've long had my eye on this special looking plane, thinking it would make a super looking stunter, and in fact it does. I don't mean to upstage Ted F. as I know he is working on one, but here is a shot, taken by me in the center of the circle, during take off....try taking a picture with your left thumb some time...it's tough!

The aluminum on the original Hughes was nicely replicated by using "Flite-Metal", an aluminum material for models that was written up by Vic Macaluso in the April 2003 issue of Flying Models.

The wings and stab were painted with Brodak dark blue dope.

Note the pilot. In the past, I haven't used dummy pilots because they look so fake, but this one really contributes to the realism, don't you think?

The extra long scale landing gear gives plenty of room for as large a prop as you might want to swing. It originally had a Saito 56, but required nose weight, so the change to the 72 was made. A little extra power never hurts.

Flight performance....superb. If you are in the neighborhood sometime, drop by and I'll let you take a test flight.

Thats the flight I was at the handle. Cant you see the lines and notice the flaps down and full up in the elevator. Not! Nice picture tho. Is it april 1st?

With Rita Hayworth in the back. Or maybe on her back. They did have autopilots then.

It (the S-1S) would make a nice semi scale stunter, though. Think Windy's B-25 silver dope.

Warren I will be in NY state the first week of August and we can fly it at Davids house. I will bring my B-36 with six ST/46's. Really I will see you some time that week.

I guess my picture of the Hughes racer didn't make it with my reply. Oh well. I tried.

When I retired, I told them that, without my further assistance, computer technology would go down the drain. I guess that has come to pass,. Sorry about that.

Man, the things I do on my lunch break..... Ok, I can take a hint.

Look closer, in this high tech computer image enhanced photo, by applying sophisticated ray-tracing software, the lines are now readily apparent...ahem...yeah, that's the ticket, yeah, that's it, heh heh...

To interject a note of sanity into this debate, lets talk about designing a semi-scale stunt ship. I happen to think the Hughes Racer is far from an ideal choice excepting its neat side view. It has a very short nose, a very long tail, a super small wing and longer landing gear legs than most stunt flyers would tolerate. Assuming that it was possible to design such a model, I wonder how those gears would have worked Friday, at the NATs in 20 plus winds? The fuselage would have to be completely molded which is possible but not a widely practiced art and the finish, with paint, would never begin to describe the mirror appearance of the Hughes. It could be done, but would be unlikely to do justice to the real airplane.

To land you wheel it on real fast into the wind, then as it comes crosswind add a whole bunch of downwind rudder and brake while letting the tail down slowly. As you come down wind get ready as the tail can go any direction and then...
By the way everybody, an S-1S is a Pitts Special.
