Nats Weather??

After watching the early news this morning and seeing pictures of the results of the weather in parts of Indiana, I certainly hope that the CL flyers of all disciplines have remembered to bring and have trimmed their models to fly well with FLOATS or, as known in other parts of the country and world, pontoons.

Nils and his Magnum might do well there this year.

Although the WC says it's clear there now, there is thunderstorms forecast for the rest of the week right on up through Saturday!
I hope that everyone there has a gallon jug of anti-static solution for their lines. It doesn't look like using solid lines will be a viable option this year anyway!

Lots of wind on Sunday and lots of rain for the past week. There is flooding all over the place. The lake by the administration building is overflowing to the road.

Someone reported five planes lost in the Intermediate competition Sunday (but I did not get any results). More thunderstorms Sunday night. Old Time and Classic being flown on Monday. Winds were around 15 mph most of the morning. A thunderstorm came through just before noon and competion was stopped until 2:00. Ironically, the wind died and the best flying weather (disregarding the threat of lightning) was during the time period that things were shut down. Big rain shower to the south where the RC guys were, but the rain missed the cl circles. Flying resumed again around 2:00 just as the wind got back up to "normal" (around 15 mph with gusts to 20)

It does look like this is the weather we are going to be flying in the next couple of days. Some guys are looking good in the wind. Others, well, it could be a contest of survival.

THis is about right.

I saw a stab fold-up mid flight in the opposite first round group. also an outboard wing fold up--plane continued to fly till empty.

A large ship went in on our circle and a couple others were pancaked.

The wind-up and compression was pretty intense at times. quite a few blown out hourglasses and free-flight overH 8's.

Even most of the expert guys practicing held off for a while Sunday afternoon as the wind was whipping pretty good.

Just as we were leaving monday at about 12:30, a large severe cell was coming through with quarter-size hail and 70mph winds. It looks like this will continue throught the week.

I'm doing a bit of "long range planning" for the Worlds and US Nats next year and was interested to read this thread. Can anyone tell me is the weather described typical for Muncie at this time of year please? The Worlds web site does have a link to weather on it but from that I can't see what would be regarded as typical for the area/time of year - it's not that I/the Swiss Team are scared of course, it's just that I'd like us all to "be prepared" (biplane stunter on FLOATS?)

I don't think it is typical, not sure anyplace in the US has had typical weather this year.

"Typical" Muncie weather will range from lows in the early morning in the 60s to highs in the mid 80s in the afternoon. Occasionally you will see 90s weather. Winds range from calm to maybe 10 mph, but there usually is one day at the Nats (just one day, please) when the wind will go up to 15 or so. Or course, we may get the occasional thunderstorm and these can bring winds for a brief period of time. But they generally pass, and then we get back to "normal". Unfortunately we seem to be stuck in a weather pattern where that one thunderstorm is lasting all week.

Just figure that there usually is good weather at this time of the year and the flying areas are all free and clear so you don't get the "swirlies from adjacent trees or buildings (which there are none of.)

Tonight: Thunderstorms...possibly severe, especially early. Low 67F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60%.

Tomorrow: Variable clouds with strong thunderstorms. High 79F. Winds SW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 50%.

Tomorrow night: A few clouds from time to time. Low 64F. Winds W at 10 to 15 mph.

Friday: Partly cloudy. High 77F. Winds W at 10 to 20 mph.

Saturday: Abundant sunshine. Highs in the low 80s and lows in the low 60s
