Vampires!

Flew my first OTS Nats today. Boy was it windy! Did anyone get to see the new Vampire that Brodak plans to kit? Looked great in the air with a Fox 29. I have 4 Fox 29's and I could never think of a good place for them till I seen the Vampire fly. Can't wait to get one.

Is this the DeHaviland Sea Vampire? If so, it was designed by Bill Calkins for carrier. That plane is really neat!

The F&B kit I always wanted one of was the one with a V-tail (I think it was them, could've been Casburn). Was it called "Stinger"? I thought John Miller had started on a plan set for that one a couple of years ago?

The FB Vampire had a coventional tail. There was nothing in the advertisements I just looked at in the Fall issues of Air Trails that showed any kind of V-tail on the Vampire. As has been menteioned earlier in this thread, the Vampire looks like a 360 sq in (40" span, 9" chord) version of the Viking.

The V-tailed Stinger was designed by Dale Kirn. I forget right now who kitted the airplane. However, I think Dale has plans available. Dale had one at a recent VSC.

The Vampire is soon to be kitted by John. It is basically a miniature Viking as stated.
It weighs around 23 ounces as you see it. I can honestly say that it is the best flying off the bench plane I've ever tried. It needed NOTHING in the way of trim. It is very docile, user friendly and goes where you point it.
The Fox .29 is an old one - from the early fifties, I believe. It would probably fly well with a modern engine but might not be as much fun!
Besides being a fine OTS plane, I suspect that with the right pilot in the circle (like Dan Banjock), it would do well in classic also.
I'm sure it will be a typical high quality Brodak kit - as such, very straight forward and easy to build.

Hey Isky,........I still have two of Riley Wooten's old Vampire kits (the combat kind) from 1967 and I am going to build them up some day.........Fox .36x BB's with pacifier fuel system, just like Riley used to win the Nats in 1966. I was there and boy, was he impressive when he moved into the circle. Riley owned that circle and any sane person going up against him had to wonder in his last moments why he was trespassing there...............TD

Barry Baxter has plans for the Stinger.

Andre Ming was supposed to send me patterns off his kits a while back. Can you trace the parts for me before you build the kits? I'll draw up some plans.

See p.4 under the Combat section for the Wooten Vampire. I recall those, never had one. Foam wing. See p.2 under the Stunt section for the Stinger and Vampire, both originally F&B kits for OTS.

As for what to put a Fox .29 in, I can think of several that would be great...Barnstormer, Still Stuka, Elliott P-40, El Diablo...all PAMPA OTS legal, some with flaps, some without. My Pa's Barnstormer had an O&R .29, and it was plenty, but no, I don't want an O&R of any sort.

I'm 100% certain that Barry would not bother to sell plans without template patterns for the foamy wing. But it's just a hunch. Steve

Barry's plans are very nice. I have built about 15? different old time combat planes most from his plans. All the information needed to make the plane will be on the plans Iskandar, order a set! Don't know where you are going to get the cardboard for the wings:+

My plans are CAD drawings that include all the parts and wing templates. The cardboard shouldn't be too hard to find. I would try an art supply store.

Thanks! I didn't know if they were the original kit plans or redrawn ones, since a thumbnail of the plans wasn't in the online catalog.

I'll be ordering fairly soon. As you can imagine, I have a few choices about how to send you money, etc.. I'm also interested in the Nemesis II.
