I figured I pass along some info:

While placing an order for a replacement muffler with Brodak, just for the heck of it, I asked the nice lady if they had any B40's in stock. She checked with someone and said yes, they still have some B40's in stock. I am not sure how many they have in stock though so if you're looking for a new Brodak 40, give them a call sooner than later.

P.S. I'll vote for John Brodak as PAMPA president if he promises to make a B60 that's a direct bolt-in for ST46 mounts.

That's interesting. I have some, also, that came just before we headed out for the Nats. At that time they said they were out and wouldn't get any more in until December. I have more on order then, but, hmmm.

You're welcome. Brodak 40 is indeed a wonderfull motor and a bargain at $100. It's got everything going for it: exhaust note, truck like pulling power, clean 4-2-4, Fox35 mounting compatability and price.

>Fox35 mounting compatability

Steve:
Actually, the B 40 is a drop in into OS 35S mounts, or will fit OS 35/40SP mounts but the shaft is 1/2" shorter. It would seem then that it would not be a drop in into Fox 35 mounts as the OS mounts are quite a bit different and the case is wider. Shaft length might be close though.
Agreed, the B 40 is hard to beat though some quality control issues do seem to be rearing their head with the latest batch. Last night, I heard of one with a bad spraybar(not threaded deep enough for needle to seat).
No doubt, John will address these quality control issues with those doing the assembling as he seems determined to always put out a top quality product. Totally agree they are a very nice out of the box stunt engine, no multiple years wait from engine tweakers, etc., and attractively priced.

Jim,

I beleive OS 35-40s have same crankcase spacing as Fox 35. B40's mounting hole spacing on each lug is actually the same as Fox's thus making in a straight plug in. I have proved this theory to myself when I replaced the Fox on my Banshee with B40.

Interesting!
I just took an unenlarged fox 35 and a new B 40 and compared side to side. The front to back hole spacing is visibly different. I get .6 for the fox and .66 for the Brodak on my plastic calipers. Side to side hole spacing is difficult to compare visually but on the calipers I get 1.57 center to center for the Brodak and 1.48 for the fox.
This is not to argue the point. A fox with enlarged holes could well fit or perhaps on a profile with enlarged bolt holes through the bearers.
They do drop into a tight blind nut mount set up for a 35S. I have been using profiles originally drilled for a 35S to break in the B 40's and it's a no sweat drop in.

Could it be the B40 spacing was designed to accomodate either motor?

No, the Brodak 40 is designed to replace the OS 35S which has the same mounting hole layout as the 35/40 FP, but a shorter crank. This is a good engine for the classic ships and was designed to replace the engines of that era. The Double Starr is a take-off on the Fox. The Brodak should definitely be stronger.

RE: Brodak 40's are available direct fro#9 source
Leonard,

I agree with you 100% that B40 is much stronger than a Fox35. I do beg to differ on the inability of B40 to direct swap into Fox mounts. I did bolt it into the same mounting holes as the Fox 35 though without filing lug holes or enlarging holes in the engine mounts.
I double-checked the motor description I found on Windy Urtnowski's web site http://www.windyurtnowski.com/windy02/store/engines/brodak40.htm
The following is the excerpt from the second paragraph on that page: "This engine is based on the Fox .35, but with greater bore and stroke and modern stunt prting allowing use of finer pitch props AAC construction, comes with its own muffler. A direct swap into Fox mounts, it weighs the same too."

I think Windy probably got this confused with the Double Starr which is produced by the same company. The Double Starr .40 was made to be a drop in fit replacement for the Fox 35, whereas the Brodak .40, if you check the measurements, is made to replace the OS 35S and be a drop in fit for those mounts (and the FP as well, except for the shaft length.)

Just to double check, I measured one of the Brodak .40s I have here for stock.
Mounting hole width = 1.5995 Mounting hole length = .690

Measuring one 35S that I had on hand (with the holes a little wallowed out)
Mounting hole width = 1.603 Mounting hole length = .6915

You will notice the center of the holes is within 3 thousandths one way and one thousandth the other (worn holes in the 35S).

Measuring one Fox 35, the center of the mounting holes was:
Mounting hole width = 1.514 Mounting hole length = .615

With the Fox we were 70 thousandths off one way and 80 thousandths the other way.

But it is possible that when you drilled your holes for the Fox, you were off enough, and with enough "wiggle room" to make it work for either.

Re: The OS .35S engines that are being mentioned: Are these the OS Max-S .35s? I aquired 4 or 5 of these some years back, and have never used one in a plane. I have heard that there was an earlier version with machined steel fins, and the later version that I have with cast fins and a cyl liner, like an OSfp. Which version is the better stunt engine? These look like a good fit for the Nobler. Two of the ones I have are NIB. Thanks, ED

LNeumann · Jul 18, 2003 11:30 PM

RE: Brodak 40's are available direct fro#14 source
The later version with the cast in fins is the better engine (the one you have). This is an excellent stunt engine--not overly powerful, but moreso than a Fox and a good choice for a Nobler size airplane (I have one in a Gieseke Nobler). The rods are soft and these engines need at least 25% oil which should be all castor. Treat them well with good oil and they will last a long time.

Len, do you have a muffler that will fit these OS .35s engines? I noticed that there are tapped holes down inside the exhaust stack on each side- it would take long bolts to mount a muffler and the spacing probably is different from the ones I have now- I haven't measured. ED

The swap out with a FOX .35 issue is very interesting. I've heard it is a direct swap out, and I've heard there is a slight difference and it will not swap.

If I knew for sure the Brodak .40 would fit in mounts made for a FOX .35, I'd drive to Brodaks and get one tomorrow.

All I know is years ago I had an FP 35 mounted in a Flite Streak but replaced it with a Fox 35 stunt. The mounting pattern was NOT the same.

Using my calipers, the Fox 35 case is 1.20" wide, the FP 35 is 1.24"
The bolt pattern width is 1.52" on the Fox and 1.58" on the FP.
The fore/aft bolt pattern is 0.62" on the Fox and 0.68" on the FP.

Steve,
I just tried to swap my Brodak 40 out with two different Fox 35's that are mounted on two different planes...No go on both attempts.
My guess is either your fox has been redrilled or you have some enlarged holes on your mounts.

Rick "catdaddy" Blankenship

RE: Brodak 40's are available direct fro#17 source
No redrilled holes on my foxes. The bolts did go in rather 'tightly' but there was no need to redril the holes. Could it be that the B40 spacing may have changed between different production runs? The 2 Fox 35's that I own are both 50th aniversary ones bought early this year.

Strange...

RE: Brodak 40's are available direct fro#18 source
The Brodak 40 spacing has been the same. The Fox 35 spacing has been the same. If the Fox has slightly larger holes, if you drilled the mounts slightly off, well, you may have gotten enough "wiggle room" there to make one fit into the other mount.

a 4-40 bolt, for instance is .110 diameter. The Brodak 40 I measured has mounting holes that are about .120 diameter, and the Fox about .125. That doesn't give a lot of "wiggle room", and if there is any wallowing at all on the mounts...?? Now the Magnum 53 had a slightly different spacing that the FP, but it was made for 6-32 screws. This gave enough "wiggle room" to allow it to be mounted in the same mount as the FP with no redrilling.

Thanks for clearing things up!

While we're on Brodak motors, has anyone heard anything on Brodak 25 and 15? Has the development of these engines stopped?
