Rule Book#0 source
I got myself a 2003 rulebook while at the Nats. I have read the General CL rules and the CLPA rules section. I found an interesting little tidbit here and there.

It says under general rules in paragraph 9 that if a contestant loses a part or parts of his model not including the prop that a foul is to be called. Later in the paragraph about fouls it says that when a foul is called it is to be determined as an attempt and no score or official time is to be kept.

I have not read the entire book but I have read the CL general and the CLPA rules sections. It is a bunch of lawyer talk and I will go through it a few more times. If I have missed where it is a DQ for lost parts please enlighten me.

It also says if a model gets away from both lines during takeoff, flight, or landing that person’s scores are to be removed from the board and they are no longer allowed to participate in the contest.

I also could not find where not wearing your safety thong during a flight was a foul.

So far I haven’t found anything about DQing someone unless the repeatedly act in an unsafe manner.

I am still reading it though

All rulebook guys show me the way...

So was this done with whoever it was who had the
breakaway? If not, why not?

>You know I thought about this afternoon.

Doug, since I am the judge that DQ'd you at Texarkana, I fess up. The DQ was wrong. I just checked the book myself, and could find no written rule saying that a piece falling off an airplane constituted a DQ. It should have been a foul, which is an attempt.

If you will remember, you were having problems that day completing the pattern on the the amount of fuel in your tank. As I remember, the DQ (foul) occured on your third attempt.

So even though I was wrong, it didn't change anything. The third attempt would have resulted in a foul, which results in no score.

I won't make that mistake again.

Seems to me that the rule book used to mention "jettisoning of parts" as cause for disqualification or at least calling it an attempt. Memory fails as to which it was and when it was dropped (pun!) from the rules. Anyone remember?

This is an interesting discussion. Does Sanctioned Events 17.1 "Models damaged on landing are not to be disqualified except for saftety reasons as may be determined by the Contest Director." apply in Howard's case? Sounds like he should not have received a foul as the damage was on landing.

It (DQ) happened at the Nationals when PW brought the B-17!

On one his qualifying flights one of his mufflers flew off upon exiting the clover.

DQ was written on the board. He should have been given an attempt and rolled back two spots and gone again. At this point that is water under the bridge..

As long as I have been flying CL I have been told if a part comes off the plane the flight is a DQd and no one I have ever seen has been awarded an attempt and allowed to go agian. This is the first time I have ever heard of this.

Also it says age classes should be used where applicable. At our nationals there are very few JR and SR entries. So if Gruber wanted to he could enter Open. It doesnt really say he cant. And believe me that guy is plenty good enough to ring out the Open ranks.

De,

At the Texarkanna contest when I had the wheel off incident it was on my second attempt for the day. I could have gone again on my third attempt. I still would have come in last. The day before I had an underun and some other problems. But I am not crying about it by any means just having a discussion. I had so much fun at that contest. I always do no matter where I end up on the board. I thought it was cool that Steve won it!

>Just curious,

On this one I dont think so but my book is at home. I am pretty sure it says in there somewhere that there is to be at least one main wheel on the aircraft. Like a Flight Streak has. So I dont think belly landings are to be used however it doesnt say that you cant.

On the official flight when inverted.

Yes the flight is official when the pilot pulls out inverted. This means is it to be scored accordingly. However in the instance of a lost part the judges are to cancel the flight and not score anymore or time it anymore from that point forward. An attempt is recorded and the pilot flys again.

I think I am liking the way I am reading the rulebook. It is trying itsbest to get all flyers to fly all of their flights. You really have to be way out to get yourself or a flight DQd. Also the way I am reading it DQ means removed from the competition completely. Not just that round but the whole shootin match. You have to be acting in a dangerous manner time and time again to get yourself DQd / removed from the contest.

Starnge enough everyone I have flown with over the past 10 years has been under the assumption that parts of the plane in flight is cause for a DQ and loss of that official flight. That is not the case.
