Yes, you can run less, but also consider that you still have the same rod and the same plain bearing shaft, and you still have the same timing and you still have the same type of run. I would still lean towards 22-25% oil as part of its job it to provide cooling.
And, if you think the oil on your plane is messy, consider that the price to pay to keep your engine together. If there is no oil on the plane, what is it like inside that engine?

I had an early ABC from Fox and ran it on 22% 1/2 castor 1/2 synthetic, and after about 2 gallons of fuel the wristpin bosses in the piston were getting very loose. I salvaged the whole thing by boring out the piston and rod .018 and installing a K&B 40 wristpin cut down to fit with the teflon pads. After that I ran 29% castor in the engine and after about ten more gallons it started getting loose again. I don't know if Fox has changed any thing on this setup, but the one I have does not have much bearing area for an aluminum piston.I have not heard of anyone else having this trouble so maybe it was just this one sample. They do make a nice running profile motor because of the somewhat lower vibration. As for power, I believe the stock unit has the edge. Jim
I run mine with 25% oil but think that some synthetic is a plus for ABC's.....around 50/50 castor/synthetic.
I run 7 1/2 % nitro with 24 % castor oil and 4 % Klotz in both my steel/iron and ABC piston/cylinder setups. Like Jim, I find that the steel/iron are overall more powerful. My All American Sr was 12 years old and still on the original engine with all original parts when I gave it away at VSC this year. My Fox 35 that was in my T-Bird ( 3 yrs) and my Novi III (3 yrs) and my Novi I (1 yr) and lastly in my Novi IV (2 yrs) is still in original form with steel/iron P & C with Hemi head and stuffer backplate. Same fuel as above.
