Zinc Stearate Filler

Does anyone know where to get this stuff or how much you would use to fill .2 carbon mat with butyrate dope?
I hear that it far superior to talc when used for a filler material.

Give Randy Smith at Aero Products a call. You will find the zinc sterate will give you better adhesion, better filling and is easier to sand. You will also find that it stays in suspension better than talc (it wont all settle at the bottom of the jar. Larry, NorCal Circle Jerks.

I just ordered some from Randy Smith at Aero Products it's $9.95 small and $14.00 for a large. Shipping is $5.95. I had talked to Bob Hunt after VSC and he said to get this only from Randy.

IMHO it is the best stuff I have ever seen for use as a filler. Will not settle out like has been said, sands like butter, but is "harder" than talc.

There is an outfit called ScienceLab.com that sells Zinc Stearate at the cost of $11.18 for 500 grams. (17+ ounces!) I suspect this is the reincarnation of the old ScienceAlliance.com and ZS purchased from them in the past worked just fine. Certainly not a lot of risk here!

I will order some myself so should have a report on it soon. Maybe the Nov/Dec Stunt News, Sep/Oct column already sent in.

More info- I checked into the site and they now have a $25.00 minimum order so maybe buy 3 bags and share with others in your area. You can also call them at 281-354-6400. I plan to do this tomorrow. Will post if any problems arise.

FYI, I just went through the ordering drill and found they would charge $21.68 to ship (ground UPS) 3ea x 500g to the Seattle area. That's 3.3 lbs plus packing material. There are no other shipping options, and Zinc Stearate is not subject to HazMat. Why 3? Well, to avoid $25 minumum order fee. Thanks for the info, Don, but that shipping charge is just not acceptable. The USPS should ship this for about $5. Maybe it's the "Cowboy Way"? Steve

Be very carefull what you use, all Zinc Stearate is not created equal. The reason why Randy's is a little more expensive is because it is a finer powder, and it is safe to breath. The stuff Randy sells is a pharmaceutical grade.

OK Craig, it's yours. Pick up at Dallas meeet? Let me know. Now, about the one bag. I got a half a quart jar of Zn St out in Calif about ten years ago, probably about 8 ounces. I ran out this year so 17 oz. should be a lifetime supply for me. As for quality, I put a well known flyer onto this outfit several years ago and he said the quality of the stuff was just fine. If any of you want the "rest of the story", let me know.

Don, it sounds like you could have a small cottage industry, selling ZnSt, if you can keep the shipping cost reasonable, & if this outfit is close enough that you could go pick it up without paying their outrageous shipping charge. Whadaya think? Steve

The price is a little higher per individual unit ($14.26/500 gr), but the shipping charges are much more reasonable. A 12 pack is $124.68, and the shipping for that 12 pack is but $7.56 via UPS ground.

With a little nudge from Don I did some research, knowing the whole time that Don would be right.
One of my flying buddies used Aero Products on 3 planes and Science Alliance on 3 planes. He found no difference. I would assume Bob told me to use only Randy's because he knows that it works. I personally will use Aero Products as my preferred supplier or any of the people who help to keep our hobby supplied. I feel supporting them is preferable, since I find myself dependent on them for my Hobby.

I think it is great that there are choices but I get my ZS from Randy also. Frankly, the stuff lasts so long I can't see it as really an expense. I bought two bags, gave one to Doug, have done several planes and PC tests and still have half left. I also use a lot more than Randy suggests.

I can't remember what Randy's costs, something like $10 a bag. A bag is a lot is all I know. Feel free to by a lifetime supply.

Can anyone compare the density of this stuff versus ordinary talc and/or cornstarch? (numbers?)

The internet data I'm seeing is in different measurement systems and all very confusing to me.
