Zilla Patent-Non CL Related

Got my FIRST PATENT.

I am so stoked. This is what I do when I am not building models, playing golf, or generally dorking around.

Funny how the brain works, my first impression was that it was an electrical inverter, couldn't understand why an overhead crane apparatus was needed...so maybe I hadn't had any coffee yet.

When my supervisor and I applied for a patent in '87, we discovered a group of people called 'patent attorneys'. These people write in their own special language. I have seen some patent descriptions with 'run-on' sentences over a page long. When our patent came through, we looked at each other and asked "Did we do this?"

When the second patent was granted, I couldn't figure out quite what they had patented (no matter, it was never to be of any value to ME). I had expected it to be my bit rate interleaved pipelined telemetry processor architecture, but I couldn't recognize any of it in the patent description..

At least 'Zilla's abstract was readable, and its usefulness was obvious. He did attack and solved his problem 'novelly'..

Not really. MY friend Chris and I decided it was time to prove whether inverted build could be accomplished in a "nose to tail" assembly line in a cycle time of one minute. Keep in mind these are TRUCKS (medium duty) not pickups. The goal was 400 trucks in 8 hours which had never been done before. We built a protoype in our Amex cards with the help of the maintenance group and had a working model. The prototype would turn a truck in 20 seconds.

I designed two seperate mechanical devices for that unit that were to be considered proprietary.

The prototype was cut up and thrown in the trash by management.

Ahh, the wonders of American industry...

Good Goin' 'Zilla. I have a couple for centrifugal cleaning apparatus (centrifual acceleration of cleaning media) and my name on one for a 2 link over center hinge (automotive). All are the property of the companies I worked for at the time and all I have is bragging rights.

I have been involved with several patents. Like yours, in all cases it is the company's property, but can you imagine how it feels when your ideas were used and only your boss's name went on the patent! ahh.. corporate America

I forgot to tell you the best part - if you don't already know. As soon as the patent is granted, you get a bunch of mail wanting to sell you fancy copies of your patent, in various forms.. (like "vanity" books).

I wish now I had gotten some nice leather bound ones! (I can't even remember the numbers.)

I personally think inventors ought to get something when the patent is granted - maybe cut their shirt tail off or similar. Instead, you get to sign over all rights <in return for "valuable" considerations - your JOB> about 5 minutes later.

But no matter who the rights are assigned to or whether the patented device ever sees the light of the production day, it's YOUR name on the patent and there's no feeling quite like it. Big congratulations to you!

I have several patents with my name on them and I went the whole nine yards and got fancy faux brass plaques for all of them. They look really impressive on my office wall.
