"A driver trying to be a pilot"
Hey Alan, how was the CG? The booklet has me wondering with the photo of all the lead stuck to the tail. Do you think a hot .25 would be ok for power?
)On the 25, yes I think a "hot" 25 would work. I am not sure that my LA25 would qualify though. We have had some problem here getting good non-sagging runs on our LA (and FP) 25's over the length of a full pattern. I've been using APC 9-4's and 10-3's and launching at 11-12 krpm or so.

By the way, I bought the pilot from Carol Layton, who usually (or always) accompanies her husband Floyd to a lot of the midwest CL contests. She does a really nice job on the pilots, and the cost is very reasonable.
I also solved my Brodak 40 run problems. It turns out that the engine works best when it is the needle that turns, not the spraybar!
The Brodak 40 is really a great match for this plane. Right now it is using every drop of fuel in my 4 oz clunk tank. I am hoping that the economy might improve a little as I fly it more. If not I guess I am going to have to make my own tank, or have Fred make one of his really nice pinched tanks for me (hint, hint).
I made the plane basically stock, but I did cut out the leadout wire and replace it with some Sullivan leadout wire. However I did leave in the wire links. I will take a good look at them (need to pull out "Sadaam" for that). At the time, the links looked heavier than the stuff people use for hard line leadouts, so I thought that they should be ok. Their main downside is a propensity to jam up on the control horn. So I have been checking whether my leadouts at the wingtip look the same length. (I also gave it a pull test!)
I wonder if this might have been the original problem that Ben W. had. If the link was jammed, it could have popped out. It sounds (from other descriptions), that the link wire has been hardened, but not tempered, so it is brittle. When it popped out (maybe the first flight), perhaps it cracked. All and all, I would say to just get rid of the link. It is easy to pull the whole horn out anyway and do what you want to do.
I think the plane is a real winner.

Oh yeah! I remember seeing the rack of pilots on display at one of the SIG contests I went to. There's a large variety to choose from.

"Let not the sands of time get in your lunch."
This little beauty only burns about 3.25 oz for a full pattern and that's 10 % nitro. It'll run fine on five percent (I simply standardize on 10% locally and 15% at high altitude or hot muggy conditions) and should burn under three oz of that.
This is a beautiful engine just begging to be used in these classic era airplanes.

p.s. Ian, if you read this update guys on the best source for this dandy engine.
Do you know if the Rustler Merco 40 shares mounting dimensions with any other engines?
Fred
Too many engines- too little time!
Alan
FRED,
AS I RECALL IT BOLTED INTO MY TUCKER'S .40FP HOLES PRETTY DIRECTLY. DON'T QUOTE ME ON THAT, BUT I KNOW I SELDOM DO A LOT OF MODS IN ORDER TO PUT IN A DIFFERENT ENGINE SO IT CAN'T BE A LOT DIFFERENT.

Will they bother to change the leadouts?
How far from the circle will it impact if they don't?
