Philly Flyers Contest

A terrific turnout and great administration overcame some of the strangest weather / wind conditions that I have seen to provide a fun filled day!
Highlights were Phil Spillman being "booted" to Expert, a 50 / 50 that reached $200....generously donated back to the Club by Middlesex Modeler Carlos Serra, some heroic flying by many to avoid "rekitting" planes, and Al Knight piloting the ARF Nobler in OTS.

Is the "Green Box" Nobler and hence the ARF Nobler eligible for OTS? Must be, at least in the City of Brotherly Love.

The Philly flyers fly their own version of Old Time Stunt.

Another highlight had to be seeing Dan Banjock sprawled on the ground as he flew the overhead eights on his flight in expert.(!)

My hats off to the Philly fliers for a great time, in spite of the bizarre winds. Those guys really know how to have fun!

Thanks to all for the kind words and of course for making the event go so well. The wind reports were no exaggeration - the worst we've ever felt at our field.
Regarding the Philly Flyers rules - yes, we use our own for OTS but they're very close to what most people use. We are just a bit more liberal regarding the cut-off date. We allow the Circus King, Veco Tom-Tom and Tomahawk, for example, which were published after 1952. Also, we do not require a model to be published - we just want some reasonable proof of its age. Of course, we reserve the right to reject an entry.
Regarding the Nobler - we do not allow the greenbox version in OTS. I know nothing about the ARF but I assumed it was built around the original (1952) version (YES? NO?). Although the 1952 model is age qualified for GSCB, I personally feel the none of the Noblers should be eligible - just my opinion due to the spirit of the event.

Beginner Stunt: J. Costantino, MARY Knight, C. Saunders
OTS Beginner/Intermediate: J. Weston, K. Armish, P. Haley
OTS Advanced/Expert: P. Spillman, J. Saunders, P. Rowan

Some Notes:
Christina and John Saunders have developed this annoying habit of coming to our contests and leaving with our gold! They have an additional habit of being extremely fine flyers!!!
Phil Spillman’s fine flying had earned him “the boot” into expert – congratulations on a well deserved promotion. Now, get to work!
If I may opine, every pilot who flew in the obscene winds were truly winners – EVERYONE brought their airplane home.
And, of course, we can’t forget field boss supreme, Steve DiJulia who kept everyone in line.
Pull tester extraordinaire Len Burgess pulled one bellcrank clean out (I better not say who’s it was).
Young Tristan Burgess (son of Len) sold OVER 100 50/50 tickets. Besides being quite the salesman, he is an extremely enthusiastic rookie pilot. Watch for him in contests next season.
Numerous other Philly Flyers kept everything running smooth-as-silk.

Hi Bob, Thanks ever so much for all of your work and the work of the men and woman who helped put your show on the road. Pat and I truly enjoyed ourselves. As a matter of fact we had a hard work out in Mechanicsburg's winds Saturday afternoon and so were a wee bit prepared for the Philly Blow! Hope to see you in Western PA for our FunFly 8/9&10/03.

While running a search for "Phil Spillman" to update my address book, I came actoss this thread and realized that no one had responded to your question about the ARF Nobler. The ARF Nobler is allegedly the TF Green Box Nobler rather than the "original" Nobler ala Brodak.

Hi, Paul. The day after the contest, Len brought his ARF Nobler over and we compared it to my Brodak version. From what I can tell, the thicker airfoil and rounded tips point to the Green-Box version.
