Ty,
I hope that FP .40 isn't the one I had originally in my Cavalier.
It would flame out at unexpected places in the pattern. It flamed out just before the second corner of the inside square loop and put the Cavalier into the repair mode after only three flights with that engine. It was one that had the head modified to a hemi head arraingement too. Tom Morris had it and I was trying it out on my new Cavalier at Huntersville. Needless to say it got sent back to the modifier and I put a Len Neumann FP .35 into the Cavalier. I couldn't use a Neumann modified FP .40 because the boost porting is somewhat different and doesn't do outside squares too well. Anyway the FP .35 was more power than the plane needed by a bunch!
HI Jim. I got it on ebay, and this is right after I got back into cl. It may be the one you sent back and it ended back on ebay. Well, it has the boost port filled with JB weld now. I have modified two others, and they run much better. How ever, I now have two LA .46 engines, and they are powerful. Now what do I do with my 6 ST .46 engines?? Ha, build planes for them.
Fill the boost port, fill the boost port. It is the one opposite the exhaust. From the rear of the engine, it is the port on the left front. I mixed up a small batch of JB Weld and used a tooth pick to fill the port. Actually it is a rectangular groove. After filling it, I placed some wax paper on my finger and smoothed out the JB stuff. After it set up, I used a round dowell with fine sand paper wrapped around it and smoothed out the filler. Be careful not to sand the walls next to it. When I reinstalled the head, I added a stock head gasket. Now to install it on a profile and fly the heck out of it and see if it behaves. Half the battle is knowing your engine is not going to fail you. This eliminates that hanging by your finger nails feeling that destroys your confidence and concentration and enjoying the flight.
This Cardinal has out lasted the other three in total flights combined.
Leonard also, I believe, does some modificatons to the port timing if needed. He at least checks the cylinder deck height, which affects the port timing, which affects when the engine goes from 4 to 2 cycle mode under load. At least that's how I understand it. Leonard??
Ty, don't be afraid to add up to 3 head gaskets (.010" each) to that 40 fp. Works for me...
It would have to be a double "I" beam wing to stop the high aspect ratio wing from flexing. Or it could double as an ornithopter! Ah, but the sound in flight, during the horizontal eights. Yeah!!
Actually, I think a B24 would make a better semi scale stunter than the B17 or B25. Just look at that wing and the scale airfoil. Four ST. 46's. Nah, too much power.
