With the proliferation of anonymous posters and people promoting their stuff on e-bay, it is time to require registration in order to post. So, this is your warning.

I had planned to wait for the next generation software, but we are still waiting on a couple of "fixes" before going online.

But if you wish to post on this forum, it is time to register. I will give it a couple of days, and then I am making the switch.

Giffy;

You are already registered and logged in. If you want to leave, that is, of course, your choice, but why? You are already there?

Note - everyone should be able to read the posts with or without registering. However, if you want to post something, you will have to be registered and logged in. This will help stop some of the anonymous sniping.

I'll stay but, I saw one message board that got so up tight that you had to display your real name and mailing address and, submitt all your posts to the moderator for approval/editing. If you didn't say something nice about the moderator in your post, it didn't get put on. I made some suggestions and sometimes had a contrary opinion and, the moderator then actually devoted part of his web site to badmouthing me and my familly with derogatory text, pictures, personal e-mails and everything.

I get the warm fuzzies when I come to this message board, I just had a flash back when I heard about the change.

Thanks,
Giffy

I don't like anybody badmouting anybody (you, me, anybody else) and will exercise the right to delete those types of posts. You are certainly free to disagree with me or anybody else, however, and that is what a forum is all about. We exercise opinions about fact, not whether we agree or disagree about someone else as an individual (unless it is done in fun and people can clearly tell it is in fun. Unfortunatly, that is not always the case. I may tell a friend he is "nuts", but I still love him as a brother and offer him the respect that he deserves.)

My only hope here is to eliminate some of the sniping by making people use their real names. And we will be around to help make sure your log-in names work. The board will still be read for everybody and post directly (not through a moderator) by anybody who is registered and logged on.

Just log on, check the box in your personal preferences that keeps you logged on, and it won't be a problem. And they you will also discover some of the other features of the board that are open only to people who are logged on.

I was on an electronic project message board for over a year. You have to registor with your real name, mailing address and submitt all your posts to the moderator for approval and editing. If the moderator things the post is not approprate it never gets posted. If the moderator thinks this thread has gone on long enough it stops.
It the joking and fun gets out of hand it stops too. Everything is very serious and business like. The message board got boaring and lots of people dropped off including ME.

I fine other message boards from time to time where you have to register but I never do. It takes too much time and I can remember my user name and password.

This board is fun.

Hi Gary. This is something I have been reluctant to do, even though I have been encouraged to do so from time to time by various participlants. The biggest problem with any open board is abuse. I left the board open to people to be able to edit their posts indefinitely. It seemed (and still does) like the thing to do. Then I had not one, but two people go through the board and remove every post they had made. This totally disrupted the board, made me go back and re-edit, and I ended up setting a time limit on editing.

I have been leaving this open for people who do not wish to register or log on. But they are missing out on features. OK, that's their loss. They we have the people who come in and post changing their name with every post. And they seem to do it at the times when they do not wish to be known. That is the first problem.

Now we are getting other posts that I have to delete. They would not be there if the people had to register and were allowed only one registration under their e-mail. Thus the change.

But, for your benefit and all the rest. If you register and log in with the preferences checked to stay logged on (Yes under the first option under "preferences" in the User_menu) then you will automatically be logged on each time you return. It is not a big problem. Just remember your user name (pick your own name. You can remember that.) Pick a simple password (your dog's maiden name. Your cat's first child) It doesn't have to be difficult and we are not dealing with your bank account here. We don't have a lot of people spending all their time trying to hack each other's password.

Anyway, I am sorry for the inconvenience, and if you need help in registering or logging on, send me an e-mail. I think we will all benefit in the end.

Time has come today...#4 source

With regards to the Chambers Brothers.

I just wanted to say 'Thanks' for changing the photo input dialog window code to default to JPEG.

I tend to prepare my pictures seperately in a batch so I know they look good and what order I want to post them, etc. and then just go through a loop posting all in a thread and getting out the file numbers to work with.

It is SO much easier now not to get crossed up during that process.

It does give us traceability. Anyone who wants to post on the board has their initial password generated and emailed to them. That email is kept in the user log. If someone misbehaves, it is a simple matter of Leonard going into the userbase, pulling the email address, and taking the action necessary.

The vast majority of people who sign their posts with their real name. Brad Walker is known as Godzilla, etc. Not much mystery there.

I think this will give a level of accountability and traceability that will end most sniping and inflammatory unsigned posts.

Bill,

What does the name "Bill Byles" tell me about you? I can find out whatever I want to know by looking at your user profile. You are able to do the same for me or any other registered user of this forum.

I believe that my "handle" tells you a bit more than my name would. I will continue to use it. Old habits are hard to break. At any rate, should you desire to know my name, email me and I'll be only too happy to inform you. Most of the long time readers of this and other forums know it any way.

"Old Sourdough", Your witty "handle" is like an inside joke...kinda "cutesy" but a little like hiding. And how does your handle tell me "a bit more than my name would"? Anybody can dream up any "handle" whether it is related to their personal characteristics or not.

It is kind of arrogant of you to presume that most of the readers of this forum know what your name is anyway, since this forum goes worldwide. I have no problem with using a handle on the headline but why not sign your name after the message? Why make somebody go to the profile to find out what your name is?

Bill Byles

LNeumann · Jul 29, 2003 08:26 AM

The "handle" isn't the issue, so let's not get into a fight about that. Sure, I would prefer people would sign their name. But if they want to use the "handle" I have no problem if they fill out their profile and let people know who they are.

If you don't know who Paul is, just click on the profile icon (the little head in the upper right of the post) and if the person fills this out, the name will be visible.

The only thing Paul can't tell you in his profile is his CIA connection (Inside joke. Why, else, would anyone live in Alaska? He must be eavesdropping on the Russians, right?) And Beer Can Cove! I wonder how that place got that name? There's a story here somewhere and I shall continue to pursue it.

That was "whitty" handles!

You thought Paul was talking about clever little nicknames or something, right?

He was referring to those special Whitty Flight Handles that were so popular just a few years back. Remember? I think the Dirt still uses one for slow combat maybe. I guess you'd need to go to Ebay to find some.

I don't think the "handle" is much of an issue, just require registration and logging in to post.

(That means Paul will need to properly log in.)

I would certainly hope so. They definitely have to use their real e-mail, as this is the only way they get their first password. And they cannot change user names (would have to register again) and should not be able to register again using the same e-mail address.

I always get a notification whenever anyone registers, so I know who is doing what. But if one does what to register as GorgeousGeorge (or whatever) we should be able to click on the profile to see his (or her) real name. (Of course, it could be your wife or sweetheart, too).

Hi Will. Send me an e-mail and I will get you registered. (Just click the left icon in the group of icons in the upper right of my post)

Your problem is one of either having a firewall that is not set to accept the forum or you have a pop-up filter. With the pop-up filter, hold down the shift key while clicking on the register icon. With the firewall, you need to change settings to allow the forum. On business installations this won't always be practical. But you can register at home and still log in at work. (You would be surprised--well, maybe not--at how much traffic we get from "work")

Anyway, e-mail me with your desired user name and password and I will get you set up.

(And for those who can't find the icon, [email protected] will work just fine.)

PS: As I understand Leonard's post, it is ok to use a "handle", but it is required that your "profile" have your real name and real email addy. Wise move, Leonard. I'm glad that you are finally requiring registration. That will make the forum even more enjoyable. Frequently I have wanted to contact a poster directly, and with no registration, there is no email address available.

What many people fail to realize, is that registration is also a major benefit to them directly. The "bookmark" function alone is worth the registration. Another plus is the ability to conveniently use the *email function* for personal messages rather that posting them to the forum which contributes to a "chat room" atmosphere.

Again, all of your efforts are appreciated.

You 'da man!!

Cheers,

Warren

Did you ever notice on all those Batman episodes, nobody ever removed his cowl mask to learn his true identity? I guess he needed to put a tag on it saying, "remove mask in case of capture".

Fill out your profiles, guys, and that way everyone can tell who everyone is. (And that way we won't have any Batmen, Zorros, or whatever, hiding behind masks.)

I use an iMac, g3 processor, 400 (or 450) mhz, and I was advised to use system 9.1.

I've been scared sh...ahaam...been reluctant about installing the OSX.

Are you happy with it?

PS - Did you get that picture of the screen with Comand-Shift-3?

I have 3 right now - I'm uing an iBook G3/900 as I type. It will boot up with either 10.2.6 or 9.2.2. The other two machines - PB G3/266 Wallstreet, and PB G4/500 Titanium, use 8.5.1 and 9.1 respectively.

I would suggest, that if everything works the way you want, and you don't feel a compelling need for anything that is X-only, to leave it as is.

10.2.6 works just fine, and *most* things work fine in Classic. But X is a processor-hog, and even with a 900 Mhz G3 (roughly the match for a 1.8 gig P4 machine, for those PC Philistines who might be watching) and 640 meg of RAM, it's not very sprightly). 9.2.2 runs like absolute lightning on the same machine - and blows my work 2.4Gig P4 machine out of the water on the MATLAB benchmarks test, by like a factor of 2 on several of the tests. Not too bad for $1100, and it fits in an airline seat.

Safari is a great application, and requires OS X, but Netscape 7.1 works well enough, and if you really want to set the bar low, Exploder works OK.

As Brett said, it should work. You may need to make sure you are accepting cookies. Some firewalls are a problem if you don't set these to accept the forum.

If you have a problem, send me an e-mail with your log-in name and choice of passwords.

Hi Len,

Do it.

As for "Handles" When I raced motorcycles my I had an incident one race day. The drive chain on my RG500 broke on he fastest part of the circuit, off I came and slid across the wet grass up and over a bank and wiped out two spectators sat on the roof of their van(just minor bumps and scrapes for me and the spectators). On arriving back at the pit area someone said "Wow that was radical", it became my racing nickname. Then I got married and I will say no more.

I have always liked the 'handles' myself...Sorta like a smile that precludes a handshake. (Handleshake?)
Incidentally, C/L Gee Bee was not a 'handle' I dreamed up. It was coined by some R/Cers, anesthesized with Budweiser, apalled by a pair of leadouts protruding from the left wing of my Clements-designed scale 'C'-class Gee Bee R1. "Control Line Gee Bee??!!?"
Did a Sig Ryan as a C/L also, but it was a kit. They never called me Ryan.
I applaud Leonard's decision to require sign-in to post. It's the right thing to do.

Keep the handles. It's hard to fly without them.

Speaking of handles, wonder why noone chose "EZ-Just" or "Hot-Rock"?

Actually gcb is just easier to type than George Colby Bain.

Having a Handle shows imagination and a sense of humor, I could have used my Indian name "Runs with scissors with shoes untied" but it was kinda long. I think you should be able to call "yourself" anything that you want.

Isn't there a guy named "Windy" that just made it into the AMA Hall of Fame?

With a name like Winifred Urtnowski, he can go by Windy. I feel sorry for my son, Tyrone Alec Marcucci, Jr. I was at sea, so blame his mother. I just use Ty. It's easier to spell and I'm not Irish.

You can't. That is to prevent people from doing exactly what has been happening with unregistered names. If you could change your log-in name once you registered then people would once again be making all sorts of posts using phony names.

What I can do, however, is delete your present account and redo a new one for you.

Bill,

You need to do the following to keep from having to log in in at every visit.

1. Have at least the slightest ability for your browser to accept cookies turned on and

2. Do NOT log out when leaving the site.

I've had to log on four times since this set of forums have existed when using my home computer. The first was at my initial registration. Second was when the forums went down. Third was when I changed computers. And last was when I decided to dump all cookies because of strange activity from my browser.

Other than those times, I've had smooth sailing.

1) I have cookies on
2) I just click on the next place I want to go to

But I have to log in every time I turn my puter on

You are not alone, Bill. A lot of people have had troubles with this simply because they did set their preferences in the user menu. (I am trying to read the code so we can change the default so you don't even have to do this.)

But, for you or anyone else who is experiencing troubles in staying logged on, after you log on go to the "User_Menu" at the top of the forum. Click onto the User_Menu and then click on "Edit your Preference".

The very first option needs to be checked as "yes" (Automatically log in when you return). If this is set as "yes" and you have cookies enabled and DO NOT log out, you will remain logged in every time your return.

(And, for the record, I check all but the last one. If you check the last one as "yes" and use an automatic signature, whenever you click on a smilie it will go after the signature. With that as "no" the smilies go wherever you left off in your writing.

No problem with registering to me, and handles whatever. On other webboards I go by Clean, MrClean or whatever thanks to a SIG contest where I had shaved my head and later that being used to give me a handle with RC Combat. But everything else is there in my signature line anyways.

Hey Len,

I'm for it.

1) It's YOUR show, do what you want, I'll continue to NOT complain.

2) It's a little like labor unions, companies that have them, usually DESERVE them. I'm a Republican union member by the way...and pretty much voted my way out of a job.

>how do we join the forum? thanks.

Go to the front "Lobby" using this link:

http://clstunt.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi

In the upper right hand corner it will say, "First time visitor? Please register." Click on the link and fill out your name and desired user name. A random password will then be e-mailed to your given e-mail address. Check your e-mail. It will be there.

Now log in (you may want to cut and paste your password).

After you log in, go to user_menu at the top of the forum and fill out your profile and preferences. Make sure the first preference is marked "yes" and you will stay logged in. Just don't log out. You may also change your password to something that you can remember (Like your wife's third cousin once removed who keeps asking for a loan and you say "If I ever hear that name again, I'll...")
