Aluminium Paint

Fellows, My winter project is going to be another war bird and I want to paint it Aluminium. I am currently using automotives and hope someone knows of something compatable. I can find some real nice silver but it isn't quite the same look. Any suggestions?

There have been some posts here and comments in SN about Brodak's new B-25 silver. It gives best results put over regular Brodak silver. The nice thing about dope is that it works over open framework and can be repaired easier than most alternatives. Steve

Dear John. (I've always wanted to do that)! There was an article in Flying Models or Stunt News about someone using foil for models. It looks like polished aluminum. I don't know what the learning curve for this stuff is, but it's gotta be worth it from the looks of the model.
I have used the Brodaks B25 silver over the basic silver and the shine is really unbelievable, especially after several polished coats of clear.
So, how are things in Pampa, TX?

My buddy in CA that died due to a brain hemmorage built a scale B-25 and used Renolds wrap to cover it. He did the rivits with a modified pizza cutter or something like that. The plane looked neat. Oh yeah, that was about 1961-2.

I tried using Reynolds wrap and what a mess. Get that stuff wrinkled and that's the end of that piece. When I was in Rhode Is. I went to a contest in New Bedford and a guy showed up with a highly modified Ares. It had a stab mounted on top of the rudder and the landing gear was made up to look like jet engine pods. He covered his with the aluminum foil from cigarette packs. Looked like two cartons worth. He didn't smoke, so I don't know who he got the stuff from. I still have photos of it. This was in 1967. But the plane was an eye catcher and it flew well.

Hey fellows, I thought about the aluminium foil thing but don't think I want to go that far out. I have enough trouble with paint. I don't need to try to learn a whole new method.

Aluminum paint is nothing but aluminum powder in a vehicle. You CAN actually polish the stuff until it looks like metal- some of the IPMS (International Plastic Modeler's Society) guys do it all the time on their models. It IS an art form- and sometimes a LOT of work, but it CAN be done with "paint" alone. I have managed it once or twice, and if I can do it- ANYBODY can!
