Since lunch seems to have become a very important part of the COLD Stunt Contest, I figured I'd post a food update. I just talked to my brother-in-law Henry, (the guy that cooked up those yummy elk kabobs that went over so well last year) & an elk has once again made itself available for kabob duty this year. Henry also will be cooking up some BBQ'ed wild pig. (These things are EXCELLENT eating as well!) Charlie, (the guy that manned the other BBQ last year making elk-burgers) is going to BBQ two donated salmon this year. We're also having corn on the cob, 'tater salad & assorted other goodies.
We will have at least one practice circle available this year, either on one of the ball diamonds or the RC field besides the main one. Come on down & eat, even if you don't want to fly, we're going to have LOTS of food!

I hope that you'll have that Spotted Owl sauce for that Golden Eagle like we had last year. The snake was good also.

Spotted owl is pretty good, but it can't compare to Golden Lion Tamarind stuffed with whooping crane.

White Rhinoscerous chops with Baking Powder Biscuits and gravy! Actually, I was going to suggest Nils see if he can scrounge some Smoked Sturgeon. I got a sample last week, and it is excellent. Would be fun to make it a Potluck. "Beer Butt Chicken" would be one of my favorites, but it takes too long to cook. Can I bring a "7-Up Cake"? Both are excellent. I don't cook a lot of things, but what I do cook is good stuff. I'll email the recipes if you want them. Steve

One of our local legends is deep fried Elephant Ears. I'll see if I can get some, but I don't think they have Rhino in Sumatra anyhow. Can anybody from NYC send us some fresh Alligator? I hear it tastes like chicken, but then again, so does Rattlesnake, right, Scott? Steve

NO. I've had alligater and Snake. Alligater was good But the Rattle Snake Was better. The gater I had was here in Portland fresh from the farm. Snake was in Montana, Friend of the family slow smoked YMMM Good. Scott

One thing we're going to need is more shade awnings. The nice big one we had last year is a goner, it left with an ex-wife, I think. (Fortunately "we", as in the club, won custody of the BBQ.) We'll have at least two small awnings but we could use more. If anyone that's coming has one please bring it along. We can line them up where we had the big one last year. It might be a little warm at the COLD contest this July.

I'm going to contact the local newspaper & TV station again this year. They've both been very supportive of our field & our model airplane shenanigans in the past. A little free publicity can't hurt a thing.

Well, I was vacilating about attending since the PAC contest is the following weekend. But you've convinced me. Now, if I can just find the place...

Field is located east off Hwy 97. Turn east at the blue hospital sign at North end of Redmond. Go one block to ‘T’, turn left on Canal Blvd. First right over bridge, follow signs to Negus Transfer Station. Turn left into the High Desert Sports Complex, gate to field located at rear of parking lot.

Finding the field once in Redmond is simple. Finding Redmond is simple. Finding the fastest and least agonizing way to Redmond is the TRICK! Plan on at least 5 hours from Seattle. Jimmy Johnson and I went down I-5 to Salem, and turned left. Not too bad. I have gone through Gresham (as I think Nils wants you to go) and I will NEVER do that again unless I am going the opposite direction of traffic, which is towards Redmond on Fridays and toward Portland on Sundays. On the way back from Roseburg, I went over the mountains to Bend, Redmond, Biggs Junction, Yakima, Enumclaw and Renton. Randy might stay on Hwy 12 to I-5. Howard went to Ellensburg, then Yakima, Biggs & Redmond. We laughed. Getting through the Toppenish/Yakima area is not quick.

My next trip, I am planning to go to P'land, East to The Dalles, then south to Redmond. If I don't like that, I'll go back to the Salem route. ALL routes are scenic, but some are incredibly heavy traffic. The alternative is to go Friday AM and come back Monday AM. I recommend the HUB motel. Double rooms are really two rooms, large enough for models, and all ground floor. Not fancy, but decent. "BIG O" is ok chow, stay out of the nearest Chinese place, the food there wasn't too good, IMHO. The restaraunt in Madras next to the Hobby/Computer store is ok. Steve

I'm definitely NOT the guy to ask for directions in or around Portland. I do know that if I get on Hwy 97 here in CO & stay on it, I wind up in Portland & I'm on Powell. That's pretty much it. From that point on I'm mostly lost. I'm pretty good anywhere that doesn't have freeways or downtown Big City. Now if you wanted to go from HERE, to say maybe, Higgins Creek on Grizzly Mountain, or to maybe Clarno Rapids on the John Day River, I could draw you a map. However, from here in Metolius to Delta Park in Portland you have to go into Washington until you see the nuke plant & then turn around & drive 40 miles back to Portland. That's the way I did it once last winter. People asking ME for directions from "anywhere" in Portland! I've got some friends that are going to get a rear kick outa this
