Tom,
I sure do! I still have some "Cotton Candy" left and I am currently using "Grape". I also have some "Cinnamon" and just bought some "Strawberry". I'll try the new flavors this weekend in St. Louis at Allen Brickhaus' contest.

I'll have to vouch Crist adorned us with his grape scented patterns at our recent MN contest.

Perhaps he'll eventually convince someone to lick the castor off the plane...

I went through that phase. The worst was anise oil. It made everything smell like licorice. I doubt if it would have covered up diesel, though.

What do you use for "perfume"? My wife is always complaining about how my clothes smell, and cinnamon would certainly be an improvement.

Larry,
It's a fuel additive from the motor sports world of drag racing. See a recent issue of SN for details. I get mine from:

Craft stores sell scents for candle-making, and there are also scents for decorative "kerosene" lamps (the flammable used is CALLED "lamp oil", and costs more than kerosene, because it's been deodorized). I would imagine that either one should work, but the one for lamp oil might be less suspicious of containing any undesireable byproducts.

The stink that women I've known seemed to dislike worse than the castor (which never does fully wash out of cotton, it seems), is dope. There were oils with a strong scent, like wintergreen, that would mask the dope stink with no harm to the plane or (TTBOMK) added toxicity for the user.

(I wonder if the deodorized stuff used in those lamps would mix into a diesel fuel and stink any less there than the usual stuff?)

They'll complain about you painting your airplane, but then they'll whip out a smaller more expensive bottle of the same stuff and put it on their fingernails.

I use the scented oil from Hobby Lobby all the time. Strawberry shortcake is my favorite. 2 bucks a bottle or less, no ill effects.

I used to like the smell of castor the best. Now I like the smell of YS 20/20 even better.

Both say "stunt" to me.

Since all of my flying partners fly either pipes or 4 cycles, getting stinky is not really a problem these days.

I can remember as a kid, walking by the bathroom where Mom had just used a 1/4 can of her aerosol hair spray. We'd choke, gag, cough. It was nasty stuff.

My favorite smell associated with model airplanes was the shoe polish smell when we ran Francisco fuels. I believe it was something called Power Mist. I found out later it was nitro benzene and was really bad stuff to be using. It's amazing any of us survived, what with glue sniffing, dope, and the fuels we used.

At least the new stuff is harmless.

Francisco's Blue Blazer also!
Didn't they also make Nitro-X? Don't remember that smell with Nitro-X, perhaps they had stopped using it by then.

The only Nitro X that I remember being sold was the stuff by Midwest. I never had any as my dealers didn't carry it

My suggestion for s "scent" is a NON-TOXIC version of that shoe polish smell - which AFAIK wasn't actually from Nitrobenzine itself, but plain benzine. I wonder if we can get the "plain" stuff, or was it also a carcinogen? Does modern shoe polish still smell that way? (Been wearing sneakers so long now, I'm not sure I still have any "hard" shoes way in the back of the closet!)

For our overseas readers, U.S. Benzine is a different stuff from what the British refer to as being "Benzine". I've forgotten what other product gets mixed in over there? Kerosene?

Benzene (C6H6) is indeed a carcinogen. There is some amount of it in gasoline (along with other even nastier molecules). The GERMANS call gasoline "benzin", I believe.. the Brits call it "petrol".

Hmmm...

In 1976 or so, the newfangled foam winged combat planes started getting popular in Britain. The usual method for covering them was to use giftwrap applied with wallpaper paste. And to fuelproof the wing, you'd spray it all over with.. hairspray!

There is another brand available throught www.SummitRacing.com named Manhattan Oils. They even list rootbeer, chocolate, apple, blueberry, and tangerine plus more. All $9.95. There use to be two types in Jugs (maybe summit) racing catalog one for alcohol and one for gas. I can't find my catalog to be exact. Does any one know why they had two? I guess it had to do with being able to mix but some how they have some now that mixs with both gas and alky.

What about if he was?

What's wrong with Ted's choice of color???

BTW, Rigotti uses also a MUCH BETTER fragance: Rose of Sarom, the fragance of Jesus, that draws all those that love justice, kindness, truth, peace and that were given the power to be called children of God.

Just a thought - what if we mixed in some citronella? or DEET? Would it chase the bugs away?

The link provided by Crist gets you close, but use the "search" for "Fuel Fragrance". The list below is for 4 oz bottles of the scent. But how much do you add per gallon? I like the sound of Banana (matches my models), or Pina Colada, but Water Melon sounds good on a hot day. Steve

FF-0019 CHERRY $9.95
FF-0032 GRAPE $9.95
FF-0036 STRAWBERRY $9.95
FF-0042 BANANA $9.95
FF-0047 PINA COLADA $9.95
FF-0048 WATER MELON $9.95
FF-0049 COTTON CANDY $9.95
FF-0044 BUBBLE GUM $9.95

On the other hand, a little goes a long way.

4 oz. will treat 30-55 gallons, they say. It'll mix with nitro or gasoline, which makes me wonder if it's meant to be used in methanol, but given the low concentrations, I don't think there'd be any cause for concern, even if it didn't mix completely.

Love the names. Especially "Banana Blast". Someone had some fun making these up. Reminds me of one of the eating places at Brookhaven National Labs (I was there to use the Synchrotron Light Source) - all the items on the menu had nuclear power related names. Like "Three Mile Island Cheeseburger" and "Patty Meltdown".
