Michigan CL Championships

Day one brought together 5 pilots that made up 4 contestants in both Classic and OTS. The recent power outages and the associated problems with water and such probably kept many of the normal out-of-state competitors at home.

The weather was warm and the winds were reasonable, a slight contrast to what we had on day one of last year. With the limited number of contestants and the threat of a front rolling in, we managed to get all the flying done by about 1:00. There weren't any crashes (always a plus). Curt Nixon was there with PAMPA products for sale and display.

The results are listed below, but Randy Ryan made a special trophy in honor of Rolland McDonald for the pilots choice of the Classic entrants. It was deservingly awarded to Rolland's son Bob who flew a very beautiful Ares.

A big thanks to Randy Ryan for what he put into today's events and the FAT (still have not come up with a better name) members are looking forward to tomorrow.

Hay John, Nice job and congratulations to you for your fine showing! It would have been a really nasty thing if this year's winds would have at all resembled last years hurricane blasts. Are you staying at home or in a motel in Detroit? How's the gas, water and dining up there in view of the electric shut down? Best to all tomorrow.

I did the trip back and forth as this is a "close" contest for me at 88 miles or so. I do have a cousin that lives in the general area but I am sure that I would cramp her style if I asked to stay. Had my family there both days this year. As Randy has mentioned, Grace was elected runner for the second day activities so was not readily available to be my pit girl.

Randy has laid out a better description of what is going on in the area. We stopped at a restaurant for a bite to eat before hitting the road but there were no drinks available. The area that I live in did not get any direct effects from the power outage, but I did notice a lack of ice at the local convenience store and low levels of bottled water at the supermarket. I think that we are on the road to recovery though with the next big hurdle getting the water back to drinkable status (not a big deal for those of us that live in the sticks with wells).

Missed you and Patrick this year and hope to see you guys at Cleveland in a couple of weeks.

Day two brought lower temps and humidity along with a good amount of sunshine. There was still a breeze and some thermals caused a little difficulty for some of the pilots, but for the most part, very flyable conditions. Below are the results from today's activities. Also a big thanks to CD Randy Ryan for putting on the contest and the Signal Seekers R/C Club for giving up their field for the weekend so that we could have a contest. Looking forward to next year's event. Good showing from the Cleveland group. Also looking forward to their event next month.

My thanks to all those that came out and supported the meet inspite of some difficult issues. The field did not get mowed as is our SOP the night before the meet because our service could not get any gas. There was also quite a mud barrier on the incoming road but everyone seemed to negotiate OK. We didn't have our traditional lunch since ice was not available so the folks were on their own for food and drink. All things concidered we had a really good contest. We remain on a "boil water" status and the power still isn't up to 100%, but gas is available almost everywhere now and it looks like tomorrow will be back to work. Thanks again everyone and a really special thanks to Grace Paris (John's daughter) for acting as runner today.

One slight correction: Ron Lutz' plane is a Fancher Medic with boosted FP35. Its painted in the blue and yellow scheme often seen on the Chief.

Great time had by all and I really like seeing everyone do that, Stunt folks I've found to be just as great as Free Flighters. Helpful even during competition and forever railing on each other in jest. What a great way to flee reality for a while. Without modeling though my lifetime I'm sure I'd be put away somewhere by now!

Randy, the Northcoasters had a great time and once again took home some loot. Great time was had by all considering the situation. See you all in Cleveland 9/20 and 9/21.
