I have found a good source for Magnum 36XLAs. It's a small outfit in CA that sells them for $50+7 shipping to anywhere in the US.

I have found them through eBay when I bought a 32XL for my combat ships. Their ebay id is hobbiesdirect. The were quick to ship and were very honest in dealings. When I send them a MO for the Magnum 32, they misplaced it but still shipped the motor. Eventually they found the MO long after I got the motor.

The outfit is 2 Australian guys Wade and Brett. Good guys. Call them at 1-925-516-1186 or email [email protected].

P.S. I have absolutely no financial interest in this. I just want to give something back to the community.

Steven, Thanks for the tip. thats a great price. I am just about to order a motor for SL Combat and the Magnum 36 comes highly recomended.I have been out of the hobby for 25 years, all the old Super Tigers I used to run are wore out. I will be flying Fast Combat type planes in 75 MPH, will the 36 be right or will I be better off with the 32? I also hear some people run 25s, not sure what way to go. any recomendations?? Thanks, Bailey

Magnums are strong motors. I've seen people go over the speed limit with a 32 so 36 is DEFINITELY an overkill. Those guys should have 32s as well.

I am clearly not a combat afficianado, but for speed limit, wouldn't the obvious path be to get the honkin'est 36 available, put on an 11-4, and then build the plane large enough to control the speed?

Too big a prop. A "honkingest .36" would probably need a 9x3 or 9x2 to hit 75mph at full RPM (maybe 24-25K, which means you'd need a custom fiberglass/carbon one). And it would use fuel like no one's business!

What some people used to do was take a Mark IV, block off the venturi with a block of wood and feed in the air through one of the side holes (about 1/8"). Then they'd use a 9x4 prop.

Brett You hit the nail on the head! When Bare first came up with the 80mph event, He restricted the engine displacement to .36cu" and limited the wing area to 600sq". If I were serious about speed limit Combat, I would get the Baddest Honkin'est engine allowed and build the biggest, lightest wing area model I could get away with. For a .40 I woud build something with 700-850sq"'s....and then set pitch and RPM to yield the maximum speed allowed for that event, It likely would mean modifying production props to the appropriate pitch.
Bare's event proposal didn't pass of course...But the 80mph event popped up several years later with no provision to limit wing area.
The area limit was to prevent specialized 80mph models being developed and thus ruin a fun, easy entry event....

For Steve Y., You don't adjust model speed with engine size...You set speed with prop pitch and RPM...

I just re-read your post. If you are going to fly a fast combat ship in slow, you might want to consider a 25 size motor. Fast combat airfoils are generally thinner than GX wings and don't need a lot of power to reach 75mph.

I fly speed limit combat with fast combat ships with 36s' they run great, I use old fox combat specials, the problem with the 25s is that if you go down in a combat match they are really hard to start when they are hot, (low compression) the 36 or 32 will probably not have this problem.. BEN

Ya we know about the 25's not hot starting from our triathlon this year Next year I am going to be ready with an iron piston FP-25. No more getting beat by a Fox-35

The airframes I'm flying are blown up versions of what I flew in the '70s, 42inch span and about 460 sq. inches. The airfoil is not thin and they balance with a 36 size motor. They fly well with my old Super Tigre G21s and Fox CS, however they are way fast even with the restrictors in, about 90 to 95. I think they will balance best with the 36XL, any idea what props to try to slow them down? What is a GX Combat plane? How do I register? I found this site about a month ago and have been reading posts, looks like I will get cut off next Monday if I don't register. Thanks, Bailey

I am logged on and the menus are different, but go back to the main menu where the forums are listed, look at the top and see if there isn't a Register link. .

I had to run Fox Super Fuel (5% nitro) and a 10-4 on my G21-35's in order to get them slowed down enough for SL combat.

Bob, I've tried the 5% but not the 10-4, I'll get one and try it this weekend. Leonard, I'll let you know if I have any problems registering. Thanks, Bailey

MY speed limit setup was the Magnum .28 (the .25 would work as well) with a 8x4 prop (actually a 9x4 Top Flite Nylon cut down). Easy starting, plenty of power (too much unless you blocked off part of the intake), went through turns fine.

You don't really need the .36 OR the .32.

Can't say I've had this problem with my Magnum .28s. I HAVE had it with Fox Stunts. Let the engine rev, don't bog it down with too big a prop, and it'll run cooler. Don't run it too lean, either.

Something that should be in every Combat pitbox is "suntan lotion". This consists of 50% STP, 50% Marvel Mystery Oil. If you go up too lean, and come down hot, a squirt in the exhaust is like magic for restarting!
