New Oregon field open to club members...

I hate to pour cold water on a great milestone, but the museum director came out after you had left to tell us we couldn't fly anymore. Seem that his idea of ready to fly involves a whole list of hurdles.

1. Evergreen Museum insurance
2. Something about a 30 day waiting period for the land use change.
3. No flying until the official opening.
4. No opening until grass and bushes are planted.

.
.
.

Someone needs to get the official checklist in writing!

Hi Jerry, I would like go to the new field in Mac but it seems like lots of red tape going on. The school yard here at Donald will have kids all over soon as school will be starting in a couple weeks. Only flown the Tanager once sence the inverted crash. It flew well, but the tank had a crack in it and the muffler gasket is gone. I had a previous post on that topic. Hope to see you fly again, I sure like your style. Greg

Which brings up my plan. I just got the area marked and am starting to cut some trees. Hopefully by next spring, there will be a flying field at the far end of my property. I've about had it with dodging little leaguers and soccer mice along with about every other concievable person that says, oh, we've reserved this or that field. I don't dare argue since one word to the school or park and I'm history. So, I decided I'd have enough and started setting up to do some bulldozer work. It'll be like flying in a washing machine since the area is surrounded by trees, but hey, at least I can't get run off of it. A fence should keep the local riff-raff out.

To bad the PEOPLE in PORTLAND didn't know anything about this opening. Just goes to show ya you got the in the click.

Well yes, we have a clique... It's made up of people who pay dues, come to meetings, and show up for the field work days. We call it membership. Scott, I phoned you in June and told you about the monthly meetings. (Third Tuesday of each month at 7pm. Need $20 bucks and current AMA.)

By the way, word hadn't reached the museum director that the field is open to club members only. He's now up to date. I flew today with no problems.

Nice looking field. To whom do I send dues? On what side of the circle are the trees?

You can send your money to Jerry Eichten. He's the VP of the club and makes all the ID Cards.

The field is located on the NW corner of the Museum, so the building is on the east side of the circle and there is a Row of 60 ft tall trees on the North Side of the Circle. I'm told the prevailing wind is from the West SouthWest. The day we flew the wind was very light and VERY variable, as to direction.

After watching you fly on top twenty day, I sure wind won't be a problem for you. I'll never understand how you managed to get those beautiful landings in a gusty gail.

C'mon, that's overly harsh. And completely unfair. If there is one thing we DO NOT have in NW Stunt, it is a clique of any sort.

Well, I do detect signs of a Secret Society, one which involves builders/fliers of Bi-Slobs, the ringleader--so I have been told--owning them in at least three different sizes.

YES I could pay 20 or so buck to join the club, AND I WILL but what I was getting at is.... This is a big deal a NEW C/L flying sight. I would have loved to come down to take photos and write something for the AMA Paper. Even though you told me in July its August and a simple e-mail would have worked. As for your entire club knowing about the opening Leo didn't know. I would have taken him. I'm sorry that you guy's had to make it short. I hope there will be another day soon.

Dan, how wrong you are!! I personally have an old McCoy that always goes "clique, clique" when ever I turn it over by hand. Also sometimes I get a bad "clique" in my lower back, due I suppose to being "blind-sided" too many times in my youth!

One of our former members (Knights of the Round Circle, So. Cal.) is a docent at the museum, I think. His name is Cecil Meade. At one of the early VSC's he flew his original Fan Dancer ,OS 35S. He might be able to facilitate and smooth out a few wrinkles for the C/L field. See if you can track him down. Say hello for me unless he gets mad for blowing his cover.

Since there has been considerable interest in the new cl and rc site in McMinnville, Oregon, and discussion of it on this board, I'd like to pass on the newest information. While the fields were open to members for a short time earlier this month, a new plan has evolved aimed at completing the remaining improvements in less time. Here's the note I e-mailed to members this afternoon:

Dear ____,

I’ve been asked by Roger Weeks, President of The Evergreen Aero Modelers, to spread the word about items of interest concerning the model field at the Evergreen Aviation Museum.

First off we want to thank everyone who has given time and effort during the field work days in August. The field is shaping up nicely, due in large part to the many volunteers who have dug holes, put up fences, spread bark dust, mixed cement, installed gates, and helped with the many tasks it takes to get the field ready for action. Already over 700 feet of chain link, vinyl, and split rail fencing has been installed by club members. We especially appreciate those modelers from other clubs who’ve donated their help. Thank you all.

And of course we should make special note of the many c/l & r/c pit tables, r/c flying stations, and the excellent frequency board, all built by our fearless leader Dave Bibbee and his assistants.

While much work has been done, there are still some major hurdles to clear before the field is ready for prime time. Dave and Roger have been in touch with the museum leadership and have come up with a plan that should get some of the remaining work done more quickly, and with less reliance on club members for volunteer work.

A contractor has been hired to cut trenches to the radio control and control line sites and install electrical service in these areas. Some of that work is already underway.

I also learned from Dave late Friday that the commitment has been made to hire a contractor to install irrigation lines to much of the model complex. This is a very large job and will require crews to cut trenches and run numerous water lines, (some under the paving, especially in the CL area) install sprinkler heads, and do some electrical work. Once the watering system is in place we will look at options for planting grass. Also possible are landscaping plants and shrubs to help enhance the visual appeal of the field.

Due to the large amount of remaining field work your club officers have conferred with museum officials and we’ve agreed to ask members to please suspend all model flying until further notice.

While we are all anxious to fly at the facility we realize that the contractors must be free to schedule their work and complete it with a minimum of distractions. So I’ll ask everyone to be patient for awhile longer while we give the workers the access they need to get things done.

As modelers we all know how long it takes to build something really nice. Such is the case with our field. When completed the TEAM field will be a showplace for model aviation unlike any other in the Northwest. We will publicize any upcoming Grand Opening events.
