Lancaster County Pennsylvania Control Line

Im just getting back into control line. Seems Im migrating backwards from RC now. No clue as to why but Im finding control line and freeflight much more enjoyable. I was wondering if anyone on here is from around the Lancaster county area as I could use some help with my first few flights. I dont really want to try to stooge launch right now and my wife is afraid of running model airplane engines
I have several places to fly locally. If I remember right we used to even have a control line club that used to fly at the county park here. No clue as to what happened to them as that was when I was a kid as well.

I remember getting my first "real" engine in Lancaster County when on vacation with my family in 1972. It was a Fox .15 and I was so proud. I ran across a kind of generaly store/hobby shop, don't remember what town, with one for $9.95 and my dad bought it for me. He was from there. I'm not and have only been there twice. Good luck, however. I will always associate that part of the country with a memory that led to many hours of great flying on Akromasters and a Magician .15.

I flew over Lancaster Sunday. I didn't see you, but we were up pretty high by then. I remember guys from the Lancaster Flying Dutchmen at contests in bygone years.

heh well yeah I went from free flight to control line to rc and now Ive gone from RC back to control line and free flight.

I believe our club may be close enough for you. We are the HAMS (Harrisburg AeroModelling Society). Our membership is all over central PA, northern MD, NJ, and we even have one fella guarding the Ohio border for us. There are more than 25 of us and you would be welcome to join our ranks. Every 2 weeks we have a club Fun Fly in Mechanicsburg, PA on Saturday. We are all control liners, but some guys dabble in RC with other clubs. Mostly we fly sport, combat and stunt.
Get in touch with me and I'll send you a newsletter, let you know when the next Fun Fly is, should be 2 weeks since we just had one, and you can come up, share the fun and check us out.

Yes I have met Phil up at the Hidden Hanger. I also spoke to him right before he left for vacation. I am planning on making it up your way in the next few weeks maybe even next weekend. Need to see when the Reading club is having their contest I want to make it up there also.
I still would like to find few people a lil more local to me so I can get out on the week nights. Its going to take awhile till I can come up and combat with yous guys skill wise. So the more flying time I can get in the better.

Hi, Bud - although we are a bit farther than Harrisburg (~90 miles), you're welcome to fly with us if you're in the Philadelphia area. We have a field in Nashaminy Park, Croydon, on the Delaware. We have two grass circles and the Parks Department requires mufflers. We fly every Saturday and Sunday.

Your not that far from Reading, come up and fly with us at the Pagoda. 2 nice paved circles for stunt and 2 paved for 1/2A. If you fly speed we have accomodations for a pylon. Dennis

Dennis Im hoping to make it up this weekend. Is Saturday or Sunday best.

I do plan to build a few speed planes once Im back in the swing of things. Been reading up on all this 1/2a speed and vintage speed stuff as well as the newer 1/2a speed engines that I still have no clue where to buy

Been about 6 years since I last flew at the Pagoda above Reading. Moved to Virgina and started flying with NVCL in 1997. Sure was windy at that Pagoda. Seemed to swirl in every direction at once whenever I tried an hourglass !

I think Russ Hunsberger is still flying in Morgantown PA. Try looking him up in Pampa directory.

Hi Bud, I was a member of the Flying Dutchmen MAC of Lancaster from 1960 until 1975 or 6. The Club has disolved sad to say. We once were good in combat and Balloon Bust! I am a charter member of the HAMS and get back there several times a summer; the last one being this past weekend! Its only 5 hours drive for me! I live 2 miles from the OHIO border adjacent to Youngstown. The HAMS have been rejuvenated and enjoy great Fun Flies on alternate Saturday mornings at Cumberland Valley High School (up in back of the complex on a Soccer field) Call either Reedy or Cartier for directions. Reading is closer by a little bit. If you fly up on the hill there be aware of crazy winds! Reedy is listed in the PAMPA book. If you don't belong you should! Its the best buy for the money by far! Hope to meet you some day soon!

Welp Im finally finding enough time to get back into my control line stuff. Seems the forums lost my user info so I reregistered. So now instead of Msaint Im Bud Morrison on the forum here.
Could those who fly in the HAM club and those who fly up at the Pagoda please post a list of the popular contest and types of planes IE classes of combat,speed,stunt ect ect. they are flying so I can get some stuff ready for the spring. The fall season wasn't good for me as I got really bizzy at work as they laid off some people and put more workload on the ones who were left, hence I didnt make it up to fly anything at all. I didnt even have time to to any building.

Hey Bud,
the HAMS fly speed limit combat. We usually use a limit of 7.3 sec/2 laps, but for sport flying you just match up with whomever you are flying. Lines are 60 ft. from the centerline of the plane to the face of the grip- .018 diameter. We don't currently require mufflers, but some guys are starting to use them. The Cumberland Valley site is getting overgrown with houses and we've had some noise complaints.

For stunt, just bring whatever you want. The most usual fields are grass, so you might want to consider 2.5 in. wheels. We can sometimes use a paved lot at CV, but that is often not available.

We are also getting back into Foxberg racing a bit. An LA 25 works well there too. We might even get a club plane program going again this year. Thought right now is any plane, Fox 35 or LA 25. We'll run an Appearance meet, Stunt, Ballon Bust, and Trophy Dash(speed and endurance) or maybe a race.
