Help needed (not models related)

This is not models related, but I don not know where to ask. (Sorry Len)

My son (17) will travel to Burns in Oregon next week. He will study one year on Burns High School. Anyone knows it there? My problem is I have no idea what to prepare for and what to take with (limited luggage for long stay). Is it cold or hot area? Snowy mountain or sunny desert? Any warnings? Or everything just fine?

Scientist Noi Zinum told me that the latitude of Oregon similar to Portugal's, though it's suposed to be a little warmer, because of the Pacific Ocean.

I have no idea, Igor, but one thing you could do is click on "Weather.com" and check for the city. They have information on average highs and lows, etc.

Just remember, he won't be in Kansas anymore (You had to read the book).

Yes Len it was my first idea. I was surprised of actual temperature 9 deg Celsius. Then I realized it was actually early morning that time. But anyway, the day temperature 31 and night temperature 9 degrees is very unusual for middle Europe. We have some 5 degrees differences between day and night.

It's kinda small for a .60.

I'll save you the trouble. Burns OR sees the seasons; Summer average highs in July are in the mid to upper 80s. Winter average lows are in the low teens in January. Give your son a variety of clothes.

Yes, I am in Slovakia, so it is the same as from US. Yesterday evening I tried to see something with my old russian trieder 7x50. Nice yelow/red circle. Just enough to see it is not any star. But nothing more - no channels, not moons, no green c/l flyers . Any other low cost tubes did not show anything usefull. It looks old seriouse work is much better thatn any new mass production. But I really wonder what is visible from Brasil. It is actually almost September, so it should be, or not?

Burns is in eastern Oregon. The population density there is very low. I think it's a desert. It is not too far from where Nils Norling lives. Your son should have an interesting time. I hope he can come to Seattle to visit us during his year in the US.

I've been to (and through) Burns many times. It's on the east side of the of the western costal range, right at the foot of the mountains and on the edge of the desert. It's a "cowboy" town, meaning that the order of importance is Rodeo, Football (American, not soccer) and everything else. It's hot in the summer (100F+ is common) and cold in the winter (below freezing, sometimes by a lot...can have great piles of snow). It's not far from there to the mountains and skiing. Mt. Batchlor resort is not that far away. It's also not far from the "real" desert. Sage brush, coyotes and snakes.

It's a small town, but areas like Bend, Redmond and Sisters aren't that far away. Nils Norling lives in Madras, Oregon, maybe an hour or 2 from Burns. Nils is on the board here.

I too have been through Burns, Oregon, and it is typical North American desert. High, dry, windy, cold, hot, few people, most mind their own business, friendly, but not nosey. Great place to live. I was born and raised in that kind of country and do miss it. Alabama is just too wet for me, folks too nosey and southern hospitality is a joke, trust me, a joke.

I'm pretty certain that there is only one high school in Burns.
I think that one of our ex Downey High School alumni was, or still
is coaching the high school baseball team there. If so, he's Joe
Rudi the ex Oakland A's Left feilder and has three World Series Championship rings to his name. Ask your son to say hello for me - i'm an ex classmate of his.

BTW Howard, thanx for invitation. I told him. But his face was clear: “what shall I speak those crazy guys playing with toys in old age speak about?” . I am only guessing, but he had model in hands only once and after flight he told me “now I know what is it about, so I go read that new book”, so I do not believe he will change mind .

He thinks he is “already adult”. Especially this summer – he was in Tokyo and in Chicago – read where I have never been. In Tokyo was International mathematical Olympiad and in Chicago was International Programmatic Olympiad – read what I never did. He got bronze and silver medal – read what I never got. … So my words are almost "void".

He did it all with his friend from Slovak school. And also that friend goes somewhere northern to Oregon too. They are both too clever and they decided NOT to take dictionaries - I would like to see it first days – I believe there is no chance to buy Slovak-English dictionary in US … but he has legs and hands healthy, so I hope he will be able at least to show “I am hungry” .

They want make last year of high school in US and arrange following study on some University. I do not know if it is real or not - we will see later – in any case it will be be good experience for them.

Hello Igor,

Your son is in for a very different experince from Tokyo and Chicago. I have been to those cities, and if I had to pick someplace completely unlike a major city, I might pick Burns, Oregon. Can your son ride a horse? Burns is in the southeast quarter of Oregon in Harney County. Harney County streches over nearly 10,200 square miles, larger than some US states. Total county population is about 7300 people -- one person for every 1.3 square miles!

The Harney basin has little drainage and is prone to flooding during especially wet winters when the Malheur Lake overflows. But most of the time there is little rainfall.

With about 4000 residents, Burns is south of the Malheur National Forest, and north of the Alvord Desert. Burns is about 40 miles north of Frenchglen, the nearest town to the Steens Mountain National Scenic Area, one of Oregon's most breathtaking viewpoints.

People there are straightforward and hardworking. There is little crime, and the schools and their activities are often the cultural center of the community.

You might have seen some of these, but here are a few websites that will tell you more about Burns and Harney County.

Will your son fly into Portland, Oregon? He'll have a wonderful time here.
