US Team Trials results

Finals day had quite good conditions with cool (and dark since we started at ~7:30, and wanted to start earlier) but light air bordering on stunt heaven at times. Towards the end (Ted, David, me, Billy, and Bob) it started raining lightly, but nothing much for anyone who has attended a contest in Oregon in the spring! Also towards the end, it started raining F/F models from the contest up the hill a ways.

Billy and Paul were really all by themselves all weekend, with the rest of us duking it out for the third spot. Ted, David, Bob, and Bill Rich were all really neck-and-neck for the third spot, and Ted just ended up edging out Bob for the last spot. I think there were really very close. From there was a pretty big drop-off to me and the rest.

Junior was flown yesterday with Rob and Chris just thrown in with the rest of us. Rob would have easily qualified for the Senior Top 10 (beat me, as I recall, amonge a lot of others). Chris had a few problems in what as far as I know is his first big-time contest, but learned a lot.

Could be one belonged to my dad, Walt Tomasch. He's a very competitive rubber flyer (mostly Old Time stuff) and for sure was competing this weekend.

I tell you, at times this weekend I really thought that looked somewhat more fun than what I was doing. Love those F1C models - straight up at 80 mph, then bunt into a perfect glide.

I exaggerated a bit - only one or two actually came over the circle. One power model (nos gas or something similar) cam right over the circle when Ted was about to fly, and then circled around and DTed into circle 1 (which was not in use at the time).

What's your dad look like, Andrew? I wandered over to the site during finals to calm my nerves and watched a "mature" gentleman packing turns into a Wakefield with a winder. Had a "bunch" of others ships in a carrier in the back of his station wagon (or van...don't really recall).

Watched him walk out and launch and was truly impressed with the performance, a long slightly spiraling climb to great altitude followed by a perfect transition to the glide. Very impressive. As I recall the ship was sort of faded orange or perhaps salmon in color.

Thanks, Tom. Not so bad for an "old" guy, huh! (inside joke)

Afraid the racer will have to wait a year now. This is not the time to go off in a new direction. I've got a new Trivial Pursuit derivative "aging" in the shop as we speak and the thought of a "Special Edition" of the San Francisco Chronicles sounds perfect!

Your dad told me you had grown beyond that sort of thing! There's only so many Steve O or "Wee Man" stunts a person can stand...

Looks to be a strong team. I know Paul has looked very sharp this year. And so has Ted.

Sorry, but my recolection is a bit different than yours. I thought is was raining moderately during the last 3 flights on Sun. Enough so my tool box is still wet with rusted tools inside---and solids were not going to work. I hate rusted tools...

Driving McClave to the airport, now that was some heavy rain! We also had the old "steam bath" coming from the airconditioning on the MD-80.

I take it you made it back? I hate to look inside *my* toolbox - I tried drying everything off, but I expect it wasn't enough.

Dave, it was raining "morderately" enough that Windy took videos of the three of you from the confines of the Pavilion with its only occasional drips through the roof.

Now I offered to man the camera if Windy himself wanted to go out and put in another flight after the three of you were done having fun in the rain, but he politely declined. I wonder why?

He'd never make it in Washington or Oregon. What we had when Billy, Bob, and David flew was good picnic weather up that-a-way.

One year in Roseburg, the rain was coming down so hard that there was an inch or so of flowing water on a pretty flat airport ramp, and the water was breaking over the top of my shoes while Paul and I judged OTS. Never even slowed down the locals. Oh, and by the way, it was about 50 degrees. Afterwards, I was huddled in my car with the heater on full blast, and wore my ski gloves. The Canadians were running around in shorts like it was summer. They really made fun of me.

That was the year we left early to make sure we got over the pass at Ashland, because it was *snowing*.

Man, we fly the "drizzle circuit" during the winter. As Paul once told me, if you're not willing to fly in a little rain and wind, you won't fly much around here. Check out the pictures from the Jim Walker Memorial thread. They are from winter flying at Portland.

Fun stuff. Hey, at least it's not snowing...much

You will note that Rob Gruber placed sixth in the Qualifying rounds, but since that assured him his place on the team as the Junior entrant, he did not fly in the Final Rounds.

All-in-all, a very good team selection, well run by Warren Tiahrt (as usual!) with Shareen Fancher and Sandy Contrata doing the tabulation.
