Can anybody ID the folks in this picture ?

And I want to know why that guy is wearing a clown suit!

The clown suit is on Howard Rush. I think it's fairly cool and good for sunburn protection. Sunscreen hadn't been invented yet, nor were sunshades generally available. I don't know anybody else in the picture. Steve

Seems to me that he has always claimed that it was done in protest of changes to some combat event rules that turned the event (probably AMA Slow) into a big, very bad, joke. I think I'm supposed to recognize the man in the left foreground (can't see enough - is that Burch when a lot skinnier? Has Bob ever been less heavy?), and probably the one with his head down next to Howard, but my memory has ALWAYS left me in the lurch about people and their names.

The problem with this digital medium is that you can't put all these old pictures out of circulation by buying the negatives.

This picture appears to be from the Lincoln Nats where I flew a really slow airplane with fixed flaps in slow combat. My plan was to fly the full five minutes at 4 mph. I would be too slow for my opponent to cut and would win on airtime. It didn't work. I had to make a pit stop, and my opponent was way too good to beat this way anyhow. Mike Greb, was that you I flew against?

I don't see Bob Burch in the picture. The guy in the foreground looks like Jim Gall of New Jersey.

The clown suit wasn't a protest. It's sorta a long story which doesn't make much sense.

I can see the rear empenage (spelling)of a clown racer, I believe.

This was before clown racers, but not before clowns.

I thought I had a picture of the fine aircraft you were flying, but I can't find it.

It wasn't me. I lost to George Cleveland first round.

Based on the guy standing at the left, looking at the flare in his jeans, and his (and others) hair styles, I would place it at Mid-70s.

Is that Howard there in the clown suit, for sure?

Since when did long stories that make no sense become a problem? Either you tell us, or I'll get Granderson of Rutherford to explain. You decide which would be less damaging.

The man in the Red and White suite is the next Governor of the great state of California!

His campaign slogan is: "I know a trick" but be careful when the lights go out "they might not be Carnies"

Well,

I'm probably wrong as usual but the person standing to the left looks strikingly like Nat Gifford whom I think that Lincoln was his last senior win and also an advanced win. Nat is now flying with us here in the NVCL and is looking very sharp again after only about 15-20 flights on his "new", well, in 1994 anyway "Newt Special".
