Do we really read Posts?

I've noticed myself doing this and wonder if maybe we shouldn't pay more attention. Things jump out at me in a thread and I respond to what I thought I read only to reread it later and realize I hadn't comprehended the post completely or correctly. Sometimes I think these things cause hard feelings, sometime just getting off the subject.

I too have caught myself "not reading" the entire message. This may come from being married for so long, being used to not listening as my wife, sister, mother et al, just go on and on and on and never get to the point. Also sometimes part of the message will cause me to recall something slightly related, and bada bing, off I go, on a tangent.

Ya, I pulled a booboo some time ago and learned to re-read any post I am responding to before hitting the send button. More often than not I will have two instances of IE pulled up, one with my reply and the other with the original post.

Maybe it is just the way my defaults are setup, but it would be nice to have the post I am replying to also visible. My short term memory is really pretty lousy, so sometimes I forget some of the details (like who it is that I am replying to).

Hmmm, now what was the topic for this post??

I've learned you can use the back and forward buttons to go back and check the post while I'm writing a reply. Even at that I find myself saying some pretty bonehead stuff sometimes.

Try Home Depot I think they have posts there. The reflective house numbers are easier to read.

I've heard a rumor that the Army also has some posts.

I think we've all done that at times. Some refer to it as stepping on your own......toes.

If I suspect a hasty answer will cause any trouble I just download the post or if it's too big Copy the text and paste it to MS Word.

Then I read it carefully, WRITE ITIN MS WORD, read it again and then post it.

What's wrong with using the button "Reply with Quote"? Then you have the post you are replying to right in front of you. Easy, except to predict where it will end up in the lineup. You could "cut" the original just before you post your reply, if you want.

I do wish some would spend a bit of time getting the spelling and punctuation somewhere close. That would be a benefit of writing your reply elsewhere, being able to use spell check. Still, the English (and American) Language is full of words that are spelled differently, pronounced the same, and with different meanings.

I had my perspective warped by a college class in Business Letter Writing. One misspelled word and you got an "F". Also, have been newsletter editor many times, and can't quite let go of the discipline. Here, it's easier to muck it up. Steve
