Restated Question......(OPEN TO ALL)#0 source
from the other day. Thanks to all of you that responded. (3-4???)
Question: If a contest offers a class to include designs up to Dec. 31, 1980 instead of the normal "Classic" event, will you still fly in it?
Classic planes, of course, would still be eligible.
Asking because I might want to bring this up at our next contest.
Thank you,
Bill

RE: Restated Question......(OPEN TO ALL)#1 source
Bill,

NO

I realize this is just a contest idea but I'd like to make a general statement about it as it would apply on a larger scale. While it would be nice to include more models, extending the Classic cutoff kind of defeats the original idea of classic. In Free Flight OT it have been considered as well but the advent of glow made the models really incompatible even though they were flown one against the other in the post-war years. The glow engines and designs won out. I also realize that there was not a tremendous performance leap in the additional decade, but the designs really don't generally fit into the Classic mold either.

I would think that a seperate grouping such as Post-Classic would be more in line. OT Free Flight had Post-War as an event but it was eventually absorbed by NFFS Nostalgia classes. Many would say they would not want to built a model for such limited use, but to fly in a local contest like this they would be anyway.

I know, Blah Blah Blah!! Sorry, I don't like the idea.

Hi Bill I had heard about this and asked some of my club members what they thought and no one liked it and now that I have thought about it I don't care for it myself. It would be better to have it as a seperate class. That's just my opinion. I would build one for the class as I like many planes from 1970 to 1980.

Randy,

I may have read this differently but I think that Bill WAS talking about a class OTHER than classic. Sorta like your Post-Classic idea.

If there was a Post-Classic class, would you enter it then, Randy?

As for myself: YES, I would enter!!!! For two reasons:
1) I grew up looking at those designs.
2) I would hate to have a decade of stunt plane development dissapear into abyss. If I didn't know any better I'd think that there was NO stunt between 1970 and 1985.

Bill, I think the best thing to do would be to just try it and see how it works in your area. It is going to depend on what airplanes the flyers have hanging on the wall. If someone with a Nobler feels that someone flying a Genesis has an unfair advantage then maybe you will loose the Nobler flyer. I don't see anyway to predict the actual outcome unless you just try it and see how it turns out.

RE: Restated Question......(OPEN TO ALL)#4 source
Sure why not. It's a contest and contest support local area clubs. AMA Rule "PROMOTE MODEL AVAITION" I don't care if I win. I want to talk to people, listen to people, watch some good flying, HOWEVER, first and formost HAVE A GOOD TIME!

I have an idea, just advertise the contest and say NO airplanes before the END date of the Classic Event are allowed. Then when you get the complaints, change your rule and allow Classic Planes to fly!

I think most of us build the old planes that we remember, and would fly against all comers. That's why you still see the Nobler's and Orientals still flying in the normal PAMPA, even though they may b e considered "obsolete" (please no flames!!!).

If I had an eligible model, yes. I'd hope this event does not replace classic.

Ian,

No offence but why is it every time somebody brings up an alternate to the standard events for a LOCAL CONTEST people here get their panties in a wad. If this stuff isn't tried who will ever know if it will work or not.

Nobody has a working crystal ball, except maybe Catdaddy

Bob, maybe I didn't understand the reasoning in the question. I love aeromodelling so much I'd more or less fly in any event going. Thus if there's an event for designs up to 1980 and I had a suitable model that fits the bill, (and that means any model prior to 1980) I'd enter. What I would not like to see is the cut-off date for Classic altered. By all means have a new class, how about "Post Classic Thorougbred"? No offence taken.

RE: Restated Question......(OPEN TO ALL)#11 source
Hi Ian,
Generally speaking, we have two contests at two sites in my "area". Huntersville (Charlotte), NC and Marietta (Atlanta), GA.

The "class" is in no way meant to replace Classic. That, in the present time, would not and can not occur. I am not "political" about this. Although the first known idea for Classic ("Vintage") "did" have a 25 years sliding cut-off date.

Back to the 4 contests, two in the spring, two in the fall. If it would be possible, maybe one of these contests could run an event that would allow planes with a cut off date of Dec. 31, 1979. It has already been suggested by one of the Contest's CD. I was trying to feel out the general consensus from this forum, which consists of fliers from all over and all skill classes, to see how "popular" this might be as a special event.

I would possibly build a new plane to fall in this category, but would probably just fly one of my planes that are already built. It would, however, give me that choice. Of course, I could build one from that period and fly it in PAMPA anyway. I don't see it as a threat to Classic, and Classic is really my favorite event. There are a few guys around here that really want to win Classic, and they are good enough to do so when ever they show up. So flying the event, for most of us, is to simply have fun with a plane that we think is "cool" for whatever reason. A cut off date is irrelavant in that situation.
When we, as competitive fliers, fly in PAMPA class be it Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, (leaving out Expert for a reason)it seems that there are more competitive juices flowing. We know we are flying against others who are generally on our level.

Now as for the Experts, they also bear down in PAMPA, but us lesser capable fliers stand very little chance of bumping them off when it comes to the local contest where all fliers are grouped together in Classic. So we tend to fly "what we like". IMHO, an Intermediate or Advanced flier is not going to go out and build a Stiletto with the idea of beating an Expert just because he is now flying a "70's" plane. But, again, it does give a choice. And it would be once a year where people could see some of these planes actually "fly".

I hope I answered the question as to the "reasoning" of my original post.

Thanks,
Bill

RE: Restated Question......(OPEN TO ALL)#12 source
I am not advocating any change to the current Classic rules. But why not run a contest with an adjusted cutoff date for Classic designs? This has been discussed in another thread several months ago. A logical alternative to conduct such a contest would be to run a "Modified Classic Event" that essentially separates the "Standard Classic" and the "Revised Classic" models as two categories within the event. Fly all the entries on one circle, using the same judges and using a flight rotation that combines both categories, but separate the scores for the two categories on the score board. This would not be hard to do and takes no additional resources other than the additional flights in the Classic event. It does mean there would need to be two sets of awards.

Might come up with some interesting results.

If there is a continued and growing interest in such an event, various alternatives could be considered in the future for rules additions or changes.

Hey I know !....Lets call it "Classic Larger Sans Drag Plus Foam" with the same ol wimpy motor....and when that becomes a loaf over the top call it " We Found a better Motor provided you can Build a 630 at 50 OZ. or Less with no real shape/appeal to speak of"!

Better yet...twenty years on "Over powered Box Fly trapezoids on oblong rectangles with foam if you want or lost/the same old thing with a different name are us .com"
