Carl Shoup (spelling?) from Colorado built one and campaigned it succesfully in OTS several years ago. By the way, Dale Kirn is still very active with us in the Knights of the Round Circle. Its called Belfrey Bound (like a bat).

Thanks John for the spelling correction, I actually copied and pasted off of Dale's website and he has the mispelling too. I then took your correct spelling unto Google
and found what you were talking about Carl Shoup, Grand Junction, CO - 260.00 - Belfrey Bound (Kirn design) Vintage Stunt X - Tucson Arizona
March 27-29, 1998

Wow, dig those crazy shoes that Dale is wearing!! Reminds me of my Jr. High days in the mid 50's. Along with white bucks too!!! Ah, the good old days and c/l was flown everywhere!! Cheers, Roy D.

I wonder.. is that a faded color photo, or a colorized B&W one? Looks like the sky's been painted blue. Definitely does have a "day of the vampire" air to it..

That's what the sky in Kansas looks like in the winter.

Hello a lot of poeple have flown my Belfrey Bound that Dale Kirn designed. At VSC 10 I first met Dale in person he lunched it for my offical flight. After the contest was call off due to rain Bart Klapinski flew it he could have won or placed with the flight he put in then at the end of the flight he did the first vertical eight that I ever seen a old time plane do. I 99 at the Charles Mackey contest I talked Dale into flying it and he had good time I more fun watching him fly it than than when I fly it.In 2001 at the Golden State Championships Phil Granderson and Paul Waker flew it and liked it. David Myer helped me ( I have broken left femur and am in wheel chair) with a control line demo at the Montrose Co. Airport a couple weeks ago for the local model airplane club. I flew the Belfrey Bound and the crowd realy liked it. Carl Shoup

Here's a couple of photos of Carl's version at VSC 12. It has a beautiflly executed pearl Monocote finish if I'm remembering correctly.

Indeed, Carl's plane is a beauty!

Carl,

So there you are! Sad to hear of your leg misfortune, hope it heals soon.
Now since you brought up the subject, you still owe me a set of plans for that thing. It's still the coolest thing I've ever seen for the center of the circle.

Pastorius,

If you took a look at the wing you'd see the mispelling...

In Christ,

Question, which word is misspelled in the above sentence?

Sorry, Ion, the Devil made me do it. (Nope, that excuse won't work, either.)

Dale had never seen or heard of Batman in 1949 when he desgined the Belfrey Bound and he was only 19 years old.

Was he deliberately doing a Count Dracula impression for the photo, or was that an accident?

It's a very neat ship. I was amazed when I learned Carl's rendition was Monokoted.
There is also Red Reinhart's "El Diablo" and Hal Price's "Bat" which are similar, but less extreme. I'm not sure the Bat was ever published although it won several trophies as I recall reading.

Thanks John for the mental jog on Price's "BAT", would you know of any website or pictures of the "BAT might be? I did a search on Google search engine and could not find. Still looking.

Hmmm. Didn't say he did, but I recall Batman comic books about then and I was 9.

Batman made his first appearance as a comic book superhero in DC Comics “Detective Comics No. 27, May 1939”.
