Dayton Buzzin' Buzzards Contest

Congrats to the Dayton Club for their success on their first CLPA contest in many many years. After a full season of windy/rainy meets here in the midwest, Dayton managed to have beautiful weather...as did Cleveland. I am sure it was bitter sweet for the Buzzards as they had drifted away from CLPA years ago and were better known for their racing, speed and combat events.

Back in 1967 Dayton was a major meet around this part of the country and it was the second meet I ever attended with my Dad as a child. That contest is the one that stuck in my mind all these years and had me so anxious to get back to modeling. Back in those days, racing speed, combat and stunt all ran at the same time. I was a busy little boy running from one event to the other and was simply fascinated with all the different types of models and was simply unnerved when I heard my first dynojet that day. All I knew was stunt but it was clear that I was going to be hooked....and I am.

Thanks to John Jordan, Bill Reynolds and son, Eric Williams, and Roger Taylor for their efforts to put Dayton back on the CLPA contest circuit. I dont have results but feel sure somebody will post some soon. For what its worth, Indy, Muncie, Columbus, Lexington, Cleveland, Detroit and Chicago clubs were all represented in competition. Put this one on your list for next years must attend list.

I agree with John Sunderland. Fun contest. Super weather. Thanks John Jordan. They have a great flying site. 2 paved circles in a park setting.

My father and I also made the drive to Dayton for the Buzzin' Buzzards contest on Sunday. The Buzzards did a great job hosting the event and the weather could not have been better. Everyone I talked with had a good time and the only crashes I witnessed were the three or four R/C planes that went in at the R/C field that is positioned several hundred yards from the C/L circles. I hope to make the trip again next year.

You need to put the Dayton contest on your schedule for 2004. Simply a GOOD contest. Well run, with lots of good pilots and a layed-back, relaxing Sunday full of fun and flying. Great job Dayton.

I didn't attend the contest, but I did visit Dayton in early September to see the Air Force Museum. So what I want to say is that if the Dayton contest is a one day affair, plan to spend Saturday visiting the museum. Really an impressive place.

So maybe next year I might plan to attend the contest, so I can revisit the museum too!
